No bargain here
Paxson isn't excited by teams' trade bait for Curry

By K.C. Johnson

November 11, 2004, 11:31 PM CST

The Eddy Curry sweepstakes began anew on Thursday, with Bulls general manager John Paxson fielding preliminary—and underwhelming—offers from at least six teams.

League sources said that, at least, Denver, Phoenix, Minnesota, Memphis, the Lakers and the Knicks called Paxson, all convinced a change of scenery would help Curry realize his scoring potential.

But names like Denver's Nikoloz Tskitishvili, Minnesota's Michael Olowokandi and Wally Szczerbiak, Phoenix's Bo Outlaw and the Knicks' Nazr Mohammed did little to make Paxson's heart race, which means this issue will be an ongoing one.

The bargain shoppers were out in full force thanks to Curry's underwhelming first game and a general sense of dissatisfaction after the Tribune reported club Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf is on board with trading Curry and one of Curry's agents went public with a trade demand in a separate published report.

The trade demand blindsided Paxson, who strongly rebuked the agent, Darren White, even as he tried to prop up Curry's sagging spirits and trade value.

"I'm not going to be intimidated or persuaded by any agent who goes public and tries to do what he thinks is right for his client," Paxson said. "I think it only hurts him and doesn't do us any good either. They went about things the wrong way.

"And I won't just do something to make any kind of move. It's going to have to make sense for us."

White said he apologized to Paxson, who met with Curry twice on Thursday and with the entire team before the morning practice. Team sources said Curry, too, was caught off guard by his agent's public request.

The second meeting between Curry and Paxson took place late Thursday. In it, Paxson asked Curry if he wanted to be traded. Curry said no.

Earlier, Curry left practice early to get a MRI test on his right knee after he hurt it while trying to set a screen.

Reached late Thursday, Curry said he suffered a deep bone bruise—the team called it a sprained right knee—and that he just wanted the latest situation to go away.

"I just want to be happy," Curry said. "I don't want to leave Chicago. This is where I'm from, and I don't know anywhere else. But I also can't imagine a whole season like this, especially if we're losing."

Curry is an easygoing sort who doesn't like confrontation and typically seeks the path of least resistance. He may not be happy he didn't get a contract extension or that he may be benched to start Saturday's game, but he also is uncomfortable with the mess he created.

"I was nervous going to practice [Thursday] because I didn't know what people were going to say," Curry said.

Paxson and coaches alike were unanimous in trying to prop up Curry.

"Until Eddy's not a part of our organization, we have to find a way to get him going, get him playing, get him believing," Paxson said. "That part falls on us. But it's a two-way responsibility. He has to buy into it.

"I just don't want Eddy or any other young player on our team looking for the easy way out thinking it will be different somewhere else. There's only one way to be successful. That is to buy into what the organization is trying to do—work hard and become a better player."

This strategy could be viewed as self-serving, too, because the Bulls know they need Curry to have, say, four straight 20-point games to drive his value back up. This could be tough if Curry's deficiencies in defense and rebounding continue.

Coach Scott Skiles doesn't hand out minutes—or sympathy.

Asked if surrounding players can have a more positive effect on a young player like Curry, Skiles said: "I was fortunate enough to play with Shaq [O'Neal] his rookie year. Shaq pretty much thought about one thing and that was catching the ball and seeing how many people he could dunk on, very similar to [Amare] Stoudemire. I think you get what I'm saying."

At the team meeting, Paxson spoke for roughly 30 minutes and stressed the importance of limiting distractions and buying into the system. Captains Antonio Davis, Kirk Hinrich and Adrian Griffin spoke, according to some present. Curry didn't.

"We have to band together," Tyson Chandler said. "This is about team. It's not about individuals. Everybody is unhappy when you lose. We have to start winning so everybody can be happy together."

Added Paxson: "That's why I sat down with Eddy. I don't want this to affect us. There's no easy out. Have I put the team in the position where we're young? Yeah, I have. But that doesn't excuse anybody from not coming to work every day and giving their best."

Players who would interest the Bulls from some of the teams who inquired on Thursday include the Knicks' Kurt Thomas, Minnesota's Trenton Hassell, Phoenix's Joe Johnson and Memphis' Lorenzen Wright or Dahntay Jones.

Making matters difficult, Curry is still on his rookie-scale contract at only $3.8 million. The Bulls do have the expiring contracts of Othella Harrington and Frank Williams and a manageable contract of Eric Piatkowski to broaden a package.

And go down the list: Paxson has divorced himself from all players—Jalen Rose, Eddie Robinson, Jay Williams—that either he didn't like or who didn't want to be here.

It's likely that trend will continue—at some point—with Curry.

Bulls

Now Curry in no hurry to go

November 12, 2004

BY LACY J. BANKS Staff Reporter

After talking with Bulls operations chief John Paxson on Thursday night, center Eddy Curry and his agents, Darren White and Lamont Carter, have agreed with Paxson that there will be no more requests by Curry to be traded and that the Bulls will not seek to trade him this season.

''I had a nice talk, got some things off my chest, and I feel much better about my situation,'' Curry said. ''I want to stay with the Bulls. I look forward to playing Saturday night [against the Los Angeles Clippers] and the rest of the season.''

Curry's comfort sufficed for his agents.

''If Eddy is happy, then we are happy,'' White said. ''Our primary objective is to do what's in his best interests long term. But we work for him.

''Now we can get back to the business of his playing basketball. I have apologized to John Paxson for not bringing the matter to him first before going public. What ended up happening [Wednesday] was a situation where we were expressing a lot of anxiety and frustrations that had been building up.''

ROUGH START

Eddy Curry had high hopes for the start of this season after dropping nearly 40 pounds during the summer. But Curry, who will seek a maximum contract next summer, is off to about the worst start possible. Here's a look at his recent weeks:

Oct. 25: Curry is involved in a preseason brawl against the Washington Wizards. He swings at Brendan Haywood's groin area and is suspended for the first two games of the regular season.

Nov. 1: The deadline for contract extensions passes. Curry's camp asked for $78 million, which did not make Bulls management happy. The Bulls didn't even make a counteroffer. He'll become a restricted free agent next summer.

Tuesday: Curry's season debut is horrible. He plays just 17 minutes and scores three points in a 20-point loss. United Center fans aim much of their wrath at Curry.

Wednesday: Curry's camp tells the Chicago Sun-Times they want the Bulls to trade the unhappy center, citing his weariness with constant losing and being the focus for the blame.

Thursday: Curry vents his frustration in a heart-to-heart with operations chief John Paxson and changes his mind -- at least for public consumption -- about seeking a trade.

The frustrations and anxiety resulted, in part, from the Bulls' refusal to make a counteroffer this past summer when Curry's agents attempted to negotiate a contract extension, and from the team's continued losing while the media and critical fans were pushing for the Bulls to trade Curry.

In Thursday's Sun-Times, White and Carter said Curry was tired of the losing and the way he and forward Tyson Chandler were being blamed for the team's rebuilding futility. They said they did not feel Curry could reach his full potential with the Bulls and wanted him to be traded.

''I'm not going to get into fighting anything through [the media],'' Paxson said before the heart-to-heart with Curry. ''I'm not going to be intimidated or persuaded by any agent that goes public and tries to do what he thinks is right for his client. I only think it hurts him, and it doesn't do us any good.

''The thing that disappoints me is that they would go to [the Sun-Times] before talking to me about their concerns. That's not the way I'm going to do business, and I don't expect them to do it as well.

''I had a good talk with our team [Thursday morning] about a lot of issues. I don't want guys looking for an easy way out and to try to find excuses for why we're not winning or why they're not playing well and think that it's going to be better somewhere else. Until Eddy is not a part of our organization, we've got to find a way to get him going, get him playing and get him believing. That part falls on us. But it's a two-way responsibility. He has to buy into it.''

Paxson denied a report that Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf had given his blessing on a plan to trade Curry.

''I have never had a conversation with Jerry Reinsdorf where he said 'don't trade Eddy Curry' or 'trade Eddy Curry,''' Paxson said. ''That has never occurred.''

Thursday started with Paxson, White and Carter saying the agents had been given permission to explore options, short of talking to other teams, for Curry to play elsewhere. But during the Bulls' practice at the Berto Center, Curry suffered a strained right knee colliding with rookie teammate Ben Gordon, was taken to the hospital and was not available to talk to the media while the Bulls were listing his status as day-to-day.

''He was setting a pick, I tried to cut around it, ran into him, and he fell to the floor,'' Gordon said. ''I just hope he's all right.''

But Thursday evening, Paxson had a private conversation with Curry, and emotions mellowed.

Curry was included in trade talks last summer when, among others, New York Knicks general manager Isiah Thomas wanted to acquire Curry along with guard Jamal Crawford, Curry's close friend. But Crawford and reserve forward Jerome Williams were traded for forward Othella Harrington, guard Frank Williams and centers Cezary Trybanski and Dikembe Mutombo, who eventually was traded to the Houston Rockets for guards Eric Piatkowski, Adrian Griffin and Mike Wilks.

Behind the guidance of White and Carter, Curry, 21, lost 39 pounds and got into the the best shape of his life, partly in anticipation of getting a lucrative extension and having a career year. White and Carter first asked for $78 million over six years to start negotiations; they were willing to settle for less. But the Bulls never made a counteroffer, not even a shorter one for half the money, thus frustrating the Curry camp.

''The rest of Eddy's career hinges on how well he performs these next 79 games,'' White said.

Curry's teammates said they did not see the controversy being any significant distraction.

''If anything, I think it can pull us closer together as a team,'' Chandler said. ''There's no doubt that losing isn't fun. It definitely takes its toll. And whoever says it doesn't is not being honest.''
