What is Summer League anyway? The enduring image for me is Nate Robinson getting his jersey retired as the best summer league guy ever; so it's fun with a tongue in cheek. Donovan Mitchell blew up summer league his rookie season. I remember an article with the thesis that anyone who played that well in Summer League was destined to be a star; so it's a sneak preview into next season. The Lakers trot out a no name roster, clearly searching for a guy or two to make the 16th and 17th spots; so it's a glorified tryout.

Well, expect Thibodeau's Knicks to zag. Summer league games are must win. The Knicks spent most of the game with their top 5 roster guys refusing to lose. IQ,Grimes,McBride, Obi,and Sims played most of the 4th with a competitiveness that seemed out of place. I got the feeling they would have started fouling for extra possessions in the final 2 minutes if the ball bounced the other way. Instead McBride, IQ, and Obi continued hammering away with their superior talent, skill. and desire until the Lakers broke.

For us fans, the excuses and fears are easy to supply. Of course the Knicks playing a lotto and first round picks should win this thing. If anything, the tight win should be a sign of concern. This perspective bias of believing every backend guy will one day be an NBA contributor is what we get for out die hard fandom. Mountains out of molehills is what we get for following Summer League in any form. But this obsession we have has finally found it's form in Thibodeau. After two decades of Isiah Thomas optimism on player development, Donnie Walsh and Mike DAntoni belief in getting in the Stars, Phil Jackson's dogmatic triangulism, and Steve Mills clear mandate to simply not make it worse,us fans have finally found their avatar in an organization that approaches Summer League as if it were a Game 7 of the Finals.

McBride will rightly get the accolades for a stellar shooting and defensive performance. IQ for competently running the offense and for correctly swinging the action to McBride's side and then exploiting the driving lanes created, and Obi for overall excellence, the real hero is still the Leon/ Thibodeau regime for creating the kind of competive environment that leaves me thinking, "Wow,I hope we don't lose Obi for the season trying to save an out of bounds possession in a Summer League game."

All last season we dealt with winning games we weren't supposed to by making just enough plays on the margins. One more good season and the Knicks will likely cause 3 franchises to throw in the towel in one form or another; Indiana, Boston, and Toronto have been padding their records with Knicks wins for years. Their futility last season caused all 3 to change coaches (counting Lowry as a co-coach). Don't be surprised if next season McBride sniffing out a Jaylen Brown,TJ Warren,or FVV end of game possession and then icing it with a 3 is the straw that breaks these guys backs. It's never been better (since 2002 at least) to be a Knicks fan.

McBride was awesome tonight. He kind of had that early season Quickley magic going. So active and more importantly, taking his shots with such confidence. Not all PG rookies and prospects can do what he’s doing - he seems to be special in that he can play in the flow and still fill up a stat sheet without being the primary option or ball handler.

This one was a big chemistry and confidence builder. I like how Obi and Quickley are the clear go-to guys. It allows the others to work on just playing a role around them.

I’m sure Grimes would feel most comfortable if they used him as a #1 option or just in an open team role like in the NBA combine. But that’s not what this is about - they’re running plays and it’s about preparing him for a sustainable role this season.

LOL Selden was a pretty big player at Kansas, but I think classic 4A player - really good in the minors, but not a major league ball player. HE has played over 100 NBA games and is only 26. Think we are giving him some veteran respect/ playing time, but not much of a shot to make the Knicks.

Man the McBride highlights are terrific, especially the defensive ones. He totally engulfed Austin Reaves a cpl times (Lakers fans think Reaves is their new Caruso). The thing I didn't expect is the NBA 3 point shot. HE clearly had it working last night, but if he is a legit 3 pt shooter with that defense, and what appears to be steady ballhandling, I think he's in the rotation.

Quick played well last night but the beginning of this might be the best thing he did. Who thinks of improving body language mid game to help team spirit? He is learning leadership skills along with PG skills in Summer League.
