We’re paying Julius a max contract

But finding players with secondary contracts like curry or Mann is where I think the gold is. We have our franchise player. He’s worthy and could get better. Drafting and spending well will determine our fate

We need bucket getters like this I agree. This is where quickley will excel in the future too. Guys who can flat out shoot and score without being liabilities on the other end is worth its weight in gold. Chris Duarte is appealing too. Guys who are nba ready shooters on rookie contracts.

can we also include Tyrese Maxey?

And Randle, as much as I love him, is not a franchise player.

If he is ours, I guess we're looking at first or second round exits every year for the next few?

We have three good draft picks - if we can find 1 gem like we did last year with IQ, we're heading in the right direction.

He can be a franchise player. He’s 26. But he’s not there now. Obviously we hope he continues to improve over the next few years. We should be looking to acquire a second franchise player no doubt. Hopefully turning Randle into a #2.

All star, all NBA and dragged that team to +10 games over .500
He needs help but he absolutely played like a franchise player. Unless you are giving me "there are only 3-4 true franchise players" argument whatever.

Who are these franchise players outclassing Julius that you speak of?

to me, a franchise player is a player who is the best player on the court at any time. I guess I might be better to say generational talent. A batman vs. a robin.

To me, RJ Barrett can potentially become that batman-esque talent for us.

I also don't know that you can attribute the turnaround to Randle as much as I think we have to give a large % of the credit to Thibs.

Now - swap Thibs with Mike Miller - do we finish how we do? I doubt.

Julius had a very good regular season and the accolades he received were well earned. In the playoffs, Julius looked more like a 3rd option posing as a 1st as he was overwhelmed dealing with being the main target of the Hawks defensive game plan. Were the struggles because of inexperience? Maybe. Inexperience didn't prevent Trae Young from imposing his will on the series against us and now has him and his team one game away from the Eastern Conference finals even with a couple of pieces missing from that Hawks lineup.

If we have aspirations of advancing to the 2nd round and beyond, we need a wing or a guard that can get to and make shots from any spot on the court especially when the play isn't working or is scouted to the point that it wont work. Getting this player is easier said than done.

Randle needs to get more help and improve. He’s 26 and should improve. He’s not quite a franchise player yet but he’s definitely not a finished product either.
