After not making a move for a point guard at the trade deadline in March, the Knicks are expected to resume their search in the offseason, armed with a handful of potential trade assets and a good deal of cap room.

While younger point guards such as Lonzo Ball and Dennis Schröder have been frequently cited as possible targets for New York, the team also has Raptors veteran Kyle Lowry on its radar for the summer, sources tell Ian Begley of SNY.tv.

The Lakers, Sixers, and Heat were in the running at this year’s trade deadline for Lowry, who ultimately stayed put in Toronto. Now that the six-time All-Star is set to reach unrestricted free agency, those teams could once again pursue him, but the Lakers and Sixers will be well over the cap and would have a hard time completing a sign-and-trade, and the Knicks will have more cap space than Miami. If Leon Rose and his front office are serious about pursuing Lowry, they could emerge as a top suitor and put real pressure on the Raptors.

At age 35, Lowry is expected to seek one more lucrative multiyear deal, but he wouldn’t require a four-year commitment like Ball and Schröder probably will. The idea of signing Lowry to a shorter-term deal could appeal to the Knicks’ front office, since it would allow the team to add an impact player while maintaining cap flexibility for another big move in the next year or two.

Whether or not Lowry will be atop the Knicks’ list of targets remains to be seen. It’s also unclear whether he’d reciprocate that interest — it’s possible he’d prefer to stick with the Raptors, head home to Philadelphia, or team up with good friend Jimmy Butler in Miami.

However, it’s worth noting – as Begley writes, and as we’ve heard from other reporters throughout the season – that the league-wide perception of the Knicks among players and agents seems to be improving. The team’s success in 2020/21 has been a major factor in enhancing New York’s reputation, as has the new front office. According to Begley, agents who have griped in the past about the Knicks’ inability to promptly return calls say that Rose’s group has been far more responsive and upfront in its communication.

In his 15th NBA season, Lowry has been his usual productive self, averaging 17.2 points, 7.3 assists, and 5.4 rebounds in 46 games (34.8 MPG), with a .436/.396/.875 shooting line and solid perimeter defense.

there's one team with $70mm in potential cap space. Every FA player not a power forward will get their named pumped there over and over

Who is Luke Adams? Another blog stating the obvious from a Ian Begley source? Every free agent is on knicks and every team's "radar". How dialed that radar is another story.
Lowrey is an upgrade from Payton, but there is but so much money and a timeline to consider. Is it me or Lowrey aging into a version of Paul Pierce younger cousin?
Kyle has had a hell of a career but I don't want him on the knicks when it clock turns midnight and he has a season and half to go. Giving him 25mm only gonna piss off DRose if he gets less. Derek is all filled with goodness but lets not press it either. Never know when he gets full of himself and wants the truck backed up.

I like the idea of retaining Rose and signing Lowry or Connelly. I like the idea of getting 48 high quality minutes at PG. Those guys will come for a 2/3 year deal and we could have a draft pick shadow those guys

I think our team is good enough where the future is now

That’s spending a lot of loot. I was thinking resign rose and find a 20 min pg that’s a clear upgrade over Payton but won’t break the bank

We see it the same with Rose

Maybe I’m wrong, but I think both Lowry and Conley would cost under $20 million, so I think this would cost less. I think guys like Ball and Schroeder will end up costing more, I just think younger guys end up costing more

I think both would need more to come here since NY is not the preferred destination. Conley would probably want some kind of multi-year deal. I think the Knicks could blow Kyle away with a large ine, maybe two year offer.

NY isn't a preferred destination? we actually don't suck for once, I think players will be excited to join

I mean for them. Kyle has made it known that Philly, his home, or Miami are he wants to go to live out his days. I think he'd come to NY, but not for a discount. Not so sure about Conley, but he's a big-time contributor on a contending team. If he was going to give anyone a discount, wouldn't it be Utah?

I mean, if they hire Masai Ujiri, might make sense that he goes back after Lowry and Powell.

Ha, the power of positive thinking! Not really used to it on this board...

Lowry is more likely than some think. He would probably welcome a move that’s very close to his hometown Philly and probably sees the Knicks as only a couple moves away. Basically if Lowry signs I’m sure the Knicks will be locked and loaded with their picks to make a big push for the final piece. Lowry seems like a Thibs type right ? His ability to play in multi guard lineups helps with rose and Quickley on the roster. His shooting ability fits alongside Randle and Barrett.

This. We have so many bad examples from the past and I immediately start to doubt whether this is the year when the player's production drops drastically. It’s a move that pulls a team that was missing just a little bit for the title last season and are now going all in. As I wrote, we are not in that situation and I would rather use cap space on someone who can be in the plans for the next 4-5 years.

And this second part. Rose means a lot to this team and he's also a free agent. What move would it be to give Lowry $ 25M per season while at the same time expecting Rose to sign for 4 times less?
