Mark Cuban joined in with his franchise player, Luka Doncic, in criticizing the NBA's play-in tournament plan.

"I get why the NBA is doing it," Cuban said in a series of messages to ESPN. "But if we are going to be creative because of COVID, we should go straight up 1-20 and let the bottom 4 play in. This is the year particularly to do it since the 10 games cut [from the normal 82-game schedule] were in conference.

"The worst part of this approach is that it doubles the stress of the compressed schedule. Rather than playing for a playoff spot and being able to rest players as the standings become clearer, teams have to approach every game as a playoff game to either get into or stay in the top 6 since the consequences, as Luka said, are enormous. So players are playing more games and more minutes in fewer days."

Cuban voted for the play-in tournament for this season, which passed unanimously.

"In hindsight, this approach was an enormous mistake," Cuban told ESPN.

So sad! No resting for "dont give a **** games" they matter more now. This is literally exactly why the play-in tourney is good IMO. Man how times have changed.. I know I am older by I know I alot of you guys remember this team:

Devil's advocate - the last 10 games of the season are usually play in tournaments anyway. Of course the historically struggling teams (eg us) are okay with it - but why would a 7th seed prefer this over finishing the regular season with enough wins to secure a playoff spot?

I understand his gripe. He said it was a mistake made. Fatigue is a major issue for players and source of injuries. So I get their concerns. Also this play in rewards teams not worthy of being being in top 8 spot. Money motivated the decision by owners but in hind sight not a good move. Also would like to see all teams lined up by records. Eliminate conferences it’s unfair when the 8th seed has worse record than an 8th seed in another conference and they go to playoffs and the other team sits.

The Mavs never expected to be in the play in games. That is why they were fine with it before and they hate it now. They can't rest KP and Luka because they are fighting for 6th. I think things are working as intended because these end of season games are meaningful.

Rules are the same for every team.
If you want to rest your guys, rest them. If not, risk them. If your not good enough to be in the top 6 then join in the fun.

As a fan, its old to go to late season game and the better players "resting" for the playoffs as the games are meaningless given the positions are set.
That a team might rest its players all season, develop a goal of finishing strong and then upsetting a higher seed IS NOT WRONG.
I like Cube. I think he is just taking the heat for his Luka. I hope they keep this rule in the future. I get the point of a compressed season being dangerous for players.

"The good old days" did not compress as many games in so short a time frame in his defense.
I love that a 10th seed can win two in a row and maybe come in hot and beat a top seed who is wobbly makes for good theatre.
I hate that Murry in Denver got hurt. That team is super strong and very young still!!! ACL's have been a problem for years now. I think he was coming off a knee injury for a few games but it was the OTHER knee the gave out.

Our dreams of a Mavericks lottery pick are not over. They're in 7th place. They're 2 consecutive losses in play-in games away from gifting us the lottery pick.

Come on Mavs, 7th seed or lower. :) Do us a solid.

Got paid much less , and health knowledge and technology was nowhere near where it's at today.

Even in the most physical ERA of the NBA, you never heard of guys taking days off for fckng rest.

Players should start getting docked 70% of their game day salary if your healthy and resting

Boo bloody hoo. If you are complaining about too many games then go get yourself a deep bench. I sympathize with playing guys too many mins buts its your god damn job man. To ya'lls point, Larry Bird played nearly 39+ mins every game of almost every season for 10+ years and didn't utter a word. Today, athlete's got access to all kinds of stuff to help keep their bodies right so there is really no excuse.

70%. They should lose the entire game pay. It’s ridiculous what Kyrie Irving is doing and the Nets just bend over for him at his command. I am praying they never win a championship. They absolutely don’t deserve it.

When they were in the 10 spot, I don’t think they cared the same way. Hope they still outright miss- Cuban is a full of himself always something to say blowhard.

except it is a good move, because its accomplished exactly what was intended. Its added meaning to regular season games. Resting stars is garbage. Manage their minutes better if you need to. This notion of resting guys in the regular season is garbage is ruins the product. Teams have 15 man rosters. Play more guys. It doesnt favor or reward anyone. It puts additional risk at being a low seed and gets more teams involved. Allows a talented team with a bad start to get hot and make a splash if they are playing well late in the season.

Bottom line is tanking is down and many more of these games are more competitive because the games mean more. That's good for the sport.

We are probably trading their pick unless it's a top 10 lottery anyway.

Do you really think the knicks will use all 3 of their picks?

You strike me as someone who has been crying themselves to sleep ever since Douchezingis took a dump on the steps of MSG, rang the doorbell, and took a fast train to where people wear cowboy hats.
