I hated this pick and I'm not surprised at all by how bad he has looked. The quicker we trade him the better for his career and the Knicks. We need to recoup some value for him this off-season before we drain it to nothing. He makes zero sense for this roster. He has no value. NBA teams have scouts. They see what's happening. Thibs needs to figure out a better way to play Obi to his strengths. Always... always remember: Less is less. More is more. More is better and twice as much is good too. Not enough is bad, and too much is never enough except when it's just about right.

![]() Obi is not a bust yet. Three things are unfortunate for him, a coach with a short leash for rooks, doesn’t have a pg that sets him up to score, plays behind our superstar .

![]() I'll give him at least a summer league, proper offseason and season with actual practices first. Sure, I'd be feeling a lot better if we'd drafted Haliburton (like a lot of people originally wanted to), but it's early days

![]() I’ve already said I’m not exactly thrilled with Obi back in the draft. Not to mention there were rumors that we would trade-up in the top 5 to get to him. Obi was a top NCAA player, but simply the combination of his age and skillset does not look promising regarding his ceiling. In other words, I didn’t think he could become some kind of above-average starter.
But on the other hand, he was supposed to be a perfectly OK backup player for 20+ minutes and I still believe he can be that. But the problem is both he and Randle are very classic PF and it doesn't suit them to play either SF or C, and Randle plays 37 minutes per game. RJ, KP and Knox played about 30 minutes as rookies, Frank played 20+...and Obi is playing 11. You can hardly become a player like that, and I say again, it's not that he's a 19-year-old kid, so that "there is a lot of time". |

![]() Obi was not my preferred pick (I wanted shooters like Vassel, Nesmith or Hali), but I was content that he slipped to us and did not take a trade to move up in the draft. Seemed like a logical choice: the guy was a great offensive talent and athlete, capable of playing above the rim, but also of stepping back to hit a jumper, while the incumbent PF was more of a Spindle than Randle. The biggest knock on Obi was his poor defense. With focus and playing time, I think he would have developed a lot faster, what has prevented this is the emergence of Randle as a superstar in his position and Thib's focus on getting to the playoffs, limiting rookie minutes and leaving zero tolerance for rookie mistakes.
Both Obi's development and tanking for Cade have been sacrificed on the altar of "respectability" this season. A foolish and premature strategy which will bite us in the *** down the line, if you asked me. |

Yep the smart strategy was to tank this year. That was never happening with Thibs. I guarantee, if Obi turns it around next season, just like the Randle haters (which I include myself in that category), the number of haters will far out weigh the number of people who will admit to being wrong. Sometimes I think people care more about being right than seeing a player they trashed succeed. |
