When the season ended last year i thought the knicks young core are 2-3 levels below Atlanta, Memphis, bulls and the Pacers. But with the showing of this young knicks during this season i think they are right there with the other young up and coming teams.

At what stage does the FO see the Knicks rebuild at now? What path would they take to be a contender? Will they follow the path of the Lakers, trade away Randle, Lonzo and Ingram to trade for a superstar and sign another superstar? They gave away a promising young team for a veteran contender. The same thing the Nets did, traded away all their promising young core for a superstar big 3. Or will the knicks follow what the 76ers did drafted Embid and Simmons and build a contender around them?

The knicks are at a crossroad, will they go the path of the lakers/nets or the 75ers? Do you think the Knicks are just a few pieces away from going head to head with the Lakers, nets, bucks and 76ers? They still have 6 1st rounders and a boatload of 2nd rounders in the next 5 years

Is now the right time for to use up some draft capital to improve the roster with the hopes of attracting a big fish in the next free agency. I think the FO should gamble and get Lonzo by the deadline to show the superstars the knicks is finally ready to sign a superstar savior. I think the knicks are close to ending the rebuild, now is the time to weaponize the draft capital. I believe this will help convince a superstar to sign with the knicks.

The talent acquisition phase. They aren't even close to pulling off one of these blockbuster give up 10 picks for a star trades yet. That is the final stage.

I definitely prefer the way they are doing it though. I don't want a 28 or 29 year old star. I want guys that are 25/26 or younger that are developing well.

I would LOVE to see them get Ball. I think the position they are going to need that star player to play is that 2/3 spot (if RJ continues to develop maybe they have that guy in house, I love everything about his came. Guy screams future captain to me). Even still they need 1 more standout player. And trading guys like Barrett or Randle, or possibly IQ (super 6th man role, I think), is is a lateral trade to me for the future.

The Knicks still need to focus on acquiring and developing talent. We have three draft picks this year. In the offseason, the team should focus on signing someone like Lonzo Ball, who would be an upgrade over Payton but who should not cost too much. Resign Rose and continue to allow Quickley to develop as a Vinnie Johnson-type scorer off the bench, which is the best role for his game right now (unless he vastly improves his playmaking). Patience is the key. Don't go trading for Bradley Beal or the like. Try to get our big FA in the summer of 2022 or 2023. We really can build this team through the draft like Golden State built their team. Two years from now the Knicks should be real title contenders, with the growth of Barrett, Quickley, and Mitch, along with Randle's continued improved play.

Talent acquisition phase. Pulling up close to half way through rebuild.

45 percent done.

I agree that signing Lonzo Ball and drafting 3 players in the top 30+ picks is the late stages of the youth movement. I feel like this team can turn a corner with a player like Ball and hitting on these draft picks. The ceiling is high with this group.

that would be great. Not sure Im the biggest Lonzo fan but signing him would be good. Trading and giving up picks would be bad. They you are potentially stuck overpaying a guy you have to resign because you gave up picks to get.

I felt the knicks are close considering they were the worst team last year and they made a great jump forward propelled by the team's player development. But yah, your right "the game" we are still in the later part of talent acquisition. At this stage, i just dont want the FO to skips some steps, just stay the course, hopefully we can get Lonzo on this team via a reasonable signing in free agency or a reasonable trade package by the deadline then we are in a position to sign a superstar this free agency or the next.

What stage? If this is a rocket how many we got? WE turning the corner thanks to Randle ascention and RJ developing just wonderfully! As discussed the light schedule we had did help us get to .500. We a stage 5 rocket? I'd say we at stage 2 of a quintile. .500 is stage 3. WE are there, but that don't mean we stay there.

I go back and forth on this. Clearly, we cleared massive cap-space to chase KD and to some extent Kyrie. We also tanked in hopes of maybe getting Zion. We struck out on all 3, so we backed into somewhat of a rebuild last year.

Once Dolan hired Rose and Rose hired Thibs, we are no longer in rebuild mode in the traditional sense. Rose was hired because of his connections around the league and his ability to perhaps attract free agents and or get disgruntled players to force their way here. Rose and WWW makes this place more desirable than it has been in years because they are connected. Also, you do not hire 63 year old Thibs to rebuild. You hire him because you want to win now and build an identity. Seems like there's an incentive to make the playoffs, which I guess the Knicks think that will make them more attractive to free agents, in addition to Rose and Wes's presence.

In a nut-shell, we are no longer rebuilding if you consider, last year being a one year rebuild.

its a funny topic. What is rebuilding? Did the Lakers rebuild? Or just trade everything for AD after Lebron said Im coming? Phili rebuilt for 5 years and now have Embiid and Simmons to show for those 5 years.

I think rebuilding indicates player development and acquiring young players first and being competitive second.

Can those 3 things happen and all be considered first? Maybe. We will see. So far we have seen player development is clearly a big part of the plan, as is winning.

I think winning is good. We are not selling the future to make the playoffs. We are pushing a young squad to win games. 80 minutes for Randle/RJ last night. They have not traded any picks for veteran role players as prior FOs did. Instead they drafted good talented kids, signed some good veteran role players and let the chips fall while staying flexible.

To me its straightforward. Improve from within, stay flexible and beef up your pipeline as much as possible. Thats how you have the pieces to land that big fish. (Its gonna be Booker)

Then there is the Celtics who have vacillated in different stages all while flirting with contending.
Emergence of Tatum and Brown while under Horford/kyrie/Haywood rostered (rare they all played together) demonstrates how hard this is. Talent has been there chemistry (kyrie) and bad luck (haywood) played big roles. The contrast to that was Toronto that after years of coming close pushed it all into the pot and came up big with a stroke of luck (GSW breaking)in finals.
GSW is rebuilding in a most interesting way. Injuries have played a big role but they interestingly turned Durant into DRussel, who then turned into Wiggins and MInny pick this year. While Nets turned Bropez into D’russell who turned allstar and contract instrumental in sign and trade to land Durant. Try mapping that out on the UK.
Much of the above improbable yet it happend.
So we got a new regime, a pedal the the medal coach, and 7 first round picks in the next 5 years.

I think our rebuild is about 90% complete. I also think it started about 21 years ago. The plan is taking shape!

The rebuild started with Phil despite the deniers to the contrary.

Phil held onto our picks, kicked Melo and KP in the ass, and built the G-league infrastructure with Miller.
Last year never happens without Phil.

It has certainly felt better in the last couple of years to have picks and cap space. We were crap, but crap with hope. Unlike in the Layden-Isaiah years.

If only Phil stayed away from Rose and Noah. Still see the logic of creating a super team in Melo's timeline, but it was a super-team only on paper, the FO should have researched into these players a lot more diligently. And his choice of coaches was bad. I guess Phil is a very bad judge of people and character.
