...what's with letting Ron Mercer drop 30 on us last night?
He had season high of 14 last year!

Relax, this is preseason, and besides, Mercer is going to be one of NJ's main scoring options this year.
If Mercer scored 30, that's saying we held everyone else on that team to 49 points. Either way, we won.

My take on it is:

1) We didn't do a good enough job guarding him lastnight. BUT...the guy hardly missed a shot. Hand in the face and all. I remember at one point during the game he like 11 for 13 shooting. When a guy's shooting like that there's not much u can do beside get a hand in his face. But at the same time IT'S RON MERCER. He won't shoot like that too often.

2) He was playing for San Antonio last season, who didn't need his offense. I believe that's why 14 points was his season high. In Jersey he will be allowed to take twice as many shots as oppose to when he was in San Antonio.

The knock on Mercer has never been his ability to score. It's always been his defense and dedication to the game all around.

He's going to be chucking them up this season so teams will have to pay a bit more attention to him.

Mercer's a talented player who just needs to get his head on straight.

bad teams always inflate players stats. on a team like the Nets someone has to score a lot.

Exactly what the guys above me have said.
Mercer is a good scorer but mediocre at many other facets of the game. No one ever said he couldn't score. Plus, it WAS one game in the preseason...

Anyone can be stopped. It is all about the defensive rotation. TT should have been the primary guy guarding him. He is long and can force him to ulter his shots. Detroit has set an example on how to guard a shooter. Lenny could have guard this hot shooter with a much longer player a la Tayshun Prince, but chose not to do so. However, if it was a regular season game, I know for sure that Lenny would have gone to that defensive strategy.

I was just pointing out diderotn that I thought that he was being sarcastic about not being able to contain Mercer. As far as the game is concerned I didnt see it but if TT was having a good defensive night what you wrote sounds reasonable.

I have got to put my 2-cents in about this defense stuff. And the need for defensive plays, and how any basketball coach IS or IS NOT a defensive coach. Obvious question but: does anyone here play basketball? How about soccer?

Basketball: On a post-play (low or high), where a defender is 1 foot away because he's using his arms, just body up to deny a spin/lateral move (you took away his space) or avoid a foul on a jump shot (you don't have to jump into him, you're already there).

Soccer: On a corner kick, where defenders just stand next to nobody hoping to block THE BALL, try hounding somebody and block THE PERSON. You won't touch the ball, but neither will he.

I've never made it professionally to either sport, of course, but it works for me.

My point is: there can never be a defensive play in soccer nor basketball, because everything is one-on-one. A press-and-trap (ok that's two-on-one but you have to get back to your man eventually), a switch (ok size might be a problem if you get caught with a bigger opponent), it's all individual defense.

Right, John Starks?
