It really has been forever. We never have a hard time finding good bigs, it's the guards. But why i'm so high on Quickley is because he's both a shooter and seems like a better playmaker than advertised. He brings this at the PG position and we never seem to get that right. Right now i believe that Randle, Barrett, and Quickley are the 3 most important pieces to turning around the franchise.
Randle, Barrett, and Quickley are good core , now we need a STAR & ALLSTAR at PG and SG
In the last 40 yrs the only 2 all stars we have signed as FA was Amare and Allan Houston, Ironically, both receiving 100 mill contracts.
The only way we are getting An all star here is Via trade, I don't care if we make the playoffs and win a 1st rnd series. My thinking is I just see no history in my life time where All stars sign with NYK.
So you have to ask yourself what piece are you willing to trade, because we're not getting an all star for DSJ, frank, Iggy, and cap space, it going to have to include 1 or 2 of our young players.
Beal would probably take RJ and and a couple future 1st rndrs
I agree Lavine's defense while improved - still needs a lot of work. That said, I think of player value vs cost. Booker, Beal, McCollum are all more accomplished players - but keep seeing rumors that Lavine's cost would be much less than these other SGs... Lavine and RJ could switch between both positions since Lavine is a decent outside/3pt shooter. Question for me is what would the cost be to get Lavine? I agree we'd have to go give something of value up - but feel like we're too attached to anybody not named RJ and Randle. I'd part with Randle but that looks unlikely at the moment. You can only play 5 guys at a time and Thibs would probably only play 8 if he had 8 solid guys anyway. Guys like Knox, Frank, DSJr, Payton, Bullock, Burks, Toppin (so far) and even Mitch are only parts to fit around - none of them are as difficult to replace. We also have like 7 1st round picks so we could afford to lose 1-2 (Dallas ones) if it meant bringing in another offensive/outside shooting player.
Lavine - would probably cost less than the others - has improved and still fits out youth timeline
Beal, McCollum, Booker - all great but older, more expensive and would likely cost more in a trade
Also - while we're probably very committed to Toppin (since we drafted him over a clear position of need in PG) - what is his future role supposed to be? Think they didn't expect Randle to perform this well and we're planning to move him when they were drafting another PF - but he's performed very well and now may stay and get resigned. You can only play Mitch + Toppin or Randle due to defense limitations.
