The issue with the Knicks is talent.
They simply do not have the talent needed to be a playoff level or competitive team.
When they last were competitive, they had someone like Porzingis as a 23 points a night all-star.
When they were a playoff team last, Melo was in his prime giving the team near superstar production at 27+ points a night.
They can change all the coaching staffs they want, but they need a star player they can build the team around. In the meanwhile just have to wait for the pieces of that puzzle to fall in place. And when they do, better hope it is a star that has prime (peak) years ahead of him.
Thibs may help some, hurt some. The young talent is decent, but none of them are going to be superstars. So you have to wait until CAA make a move for a star player that is capable to lead a team. It does hurt that despite having so many lottery drafts, and opportunities to trade star players like Melo, Porzingis, the Knicks never seem to luck into a young all-star level draft pick that can lead the team.
