Poor RJ. He probably thought he was firmly placed as the #3 rookie, but didn't even make the top 10.

I hope he tries to punish them each time he plays them. He got dinged for the Knicks not making the bubble.
Zion was first team and only played in 24 games. WTH! That's 2 fewer games than Linsanity!

I have really high expectations of the coaching staff and for players to take forward steps.

So I am not recapping every interview but what Thibs did say was that he wants RJ to not only be a scorer but also a good defender, playmaker and leader. It sounds like he has very high standards for RJ based on him saying that alone. He seems excited about Obi but that could just be Knicks fluff.

RJ is pissed off that he didn’t make any of the all-rookie teams. He plans on using that at motivation. He said he prefers Thibs style of coaching and is used to it because of his previous coaches anyway. He said he has been able to work with Obi. He also felt like he was playing his best ball of the season and was frustrated that it had to end early. He did mention he was playing on one ankle by that point so he seemed happy to get healthy.

Dennis basically said that he’s in the right frame of mind and he was in the wrong frame of mind last season and if tough situations come, he’ll be ready since he’s a better man.

I have pretty high expectations for RJ. After that, I am not really sure what to think. I would love it if Knox, Mitch, Frank, Iggy and Dennis all took at least 1 or 2 steps forward. I THINK Mitch will and that’s it.

I think we’ll definitely be seeing a lot of Julius at least to start this season.

Some Thibs Tidbits:

He said, the Draft, Free agency, player development and trades are the 4 avenues used to build your team.

He focused on Philly, and how they drafted Simmons and Embid first, let them develop, then they explored trades and free agency to build that team into a top 4 team in the east.

Thibs also said the Knicks had a plan but wanted to remain disciplined.

Seems to me that the Knicks are focused on laying the ground work for a solid culture, the draft and player development this year. Will not tank, but the losses are inevitable as they focus on player development. Knicks are banking on landing their Embid or Simmons in the draft in June and will continue to build this thing the right way. Haven't felt this good about a Knick front office since Checketts and Grunfeld. From front office to coaches, we are all on the same page and they era/error of the quick fixes are over.

I think the best part of having randle here is giving obi the learning curve needed as a rookie to not force things or be the man right away. Mitch is a beast and I think this year we will see a man possessed. Rj I think will continue the good play from the end of last year and some .... one person tibs mentioned in who he’s excited about is quickley and I agree don’t be surprised if he starts and has a rookie of the year campaign, the kid is a stud and a serious sharp shooter.

Have you been watching us the last several years?

With COVID-19, the entire season is at risk for disruption.

I can’t have any expectations.

Sure, I’d like to see RJ take a next step.

I have hopes for Obi.

I have questions about Thibs being saddled with a marginal roster.

Frank, Knox, DSjr- they may all be out of the league by the end of this year, next.

Payton is a hold over- not because he did anything, but because we couldn’t find anything better.

Randle- nice player, but is he kept beyond this year?

So - where are the bright spots on this franchise- that aren’t glaring dumpster fires!

Frank is getting seriously slept on. His offense is bad, yes, but all it takes is a little consistency on the 15 footer and he’s averaging 12pts, 6 & 5.

Google, Frank vs Luka and Frank vs Kyrie. His on ball defense isn’t overblown. He needs a defined role and a real coach two things that are coming this season. Same with Knox, he can be a useful player off the bench. Those two are so young, Christ Toppin is older than both of them.

RJ is only 20 and still managed to average 14.5 without being able to shoot a free throw.

Burks, Noel, Rivers were all solid pickups, this isn’t last year where those idiots spent all our cap space in 24 hours and overpaid marginal role players.

It’s going to look a lot better this season. We didn’t look that bad when Miller took over, imagine Thibs, Woodsen, Payne etc...

I don’t really know why people think the Knicks will be worse this year than last. I agree their roster has some holes. Best argument is that they didn’t replace Marcus Morris. Some merit that.

Thibs is probably a better coach than Fiz + Miller. Hard to gauge this
Elf = Elf. Question is still whether he is healthy.
Noel > Gibson. Should be a stronger defensive presence and offensive presence.
Randle + Payne is probably a better version of Randle - Payne.
A healthy Bullock will basically be replacing Harkless. Probably a push there.
Burks > Ellington by all metrics.
Toppin vs Portis is a vet/rookie argument. Toppin has more upside and the benefit of having some outside shooting. I wanna call this an improvement.
I love Quickley’s shooting. I think it will complement our players.
Rivers vs Dotson is a bit of a push. I have nothing bad to say about Dotson. Never understood why he didn’t get more burn.

Fact is, the rest of the roster should improve based on the amount and quality of coaching the Knicks brought it. Johnnie Bryant should have a real positive effect on our guards. Payne should have a great affect on the big guys. Mike Woodson is an amazing defensive coach. They are pairing vets and coaches with younger players. They have strong team guys. They really could use some more 3pt shooting, but all in all, I think this team will be a year older and a year better.

Berman and media make it sound like Free agency is the great failure of the off season yet few teams ever nail it.
To do that you have to have a deep core and ability to round out the team via trades. We are simply not there.
So Nalod rather than harp on the past will sit back and see how it all unfolds.
I have hope but low expectations. I skipped these videos because they all sound good. Dennis is a better man. Happy for him.
Its only relevant if he performs. Its a tough ass business these kids are in.
IM sure RJ is pissed but I don’t care what motivates him.
I’m cheering for those kids to succeed!!!ALL OF THEM!!!!!1!

Ditto. There’s zero point in not cheering for them.

I def thought the loss of Morris would make us a worse team. But you make some valid points. Fiz was the worst coach I have ever seen. But at the same time the East as a whole has gotten a lot better. So the competition is going to be a lot more fierce. All we can ask for is development from our young players. That's the only way to right this ship. Which Fiz has set us back with his terrible coaching.

Now is the time for Frank to do it. Will have better coaching than he has had in his NBA career to date. Will be as physically mature as he has ever been. Is going into his 4th season, so he no longer needs to feel the need to defer to veterans. Hit his 3s, play his defense, do the little things he does. Then expand off that.

Fair point about other teams. I didn’t consider that. My argument of better is for like 27-34 wins vs 21 last year. That marginal increase doesn’t make them a contender so much as make them better than last year. But that’s all we are looking for with a young team. Incremental growth.

In the east, Hawks improved. I’d expect them to swap records with the Thunder. They look like a playoff team. Boston always seems to manage but they are arguably worse having lost Hayward and Kemba being DL’d. Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland are marginally different. Charlotte should be improved. Bucks are arguably worse - still elite though. They gave up their floor spacing to add Jrue Holiday. The deal makes no sense without Bojan. A healthy Nets are elite, top tier. Philly is better. They added the floor spacing they needed and subtracted their weaknesses. Wizards are perhaps a year healthier, getting Wall back is an improvement.

If I am wrong on improved, teams like the Suns and the Trailblazers had losing records last year... it’s hard to qualify the Knicks as a 35 win team like Lillard’s trailblazers were a 35 win team or Booker’s suns. We don’t have the same talent levels, yet.
