This hit me hard. I've been a huge Georgetown fan since 83-84. He built that program from scratch and built it into one of the top programs in the country throughout the 80s and helped lift the Big East into the best conference in America.

John Thompson was more than just a great coach, he was a great mentor and father figure who fought for social justice and for athletes from under privileged areas. He will be missed. SIP Big John!

Rest in Peace John Thompson. Took the train a few times to DC to see the Hoyas play during the Ewing years, and of course (like a lot of you) the Big East tournament at MSG. Thompson was larger than life in every way.

Remember hearing a story years ago about how some Hoya fans (who were also big time criminals) the kind of gentlemen it was widely known you do not mess with. Believe it was Iverson they were getting too close to, And Thompson went to see them, and told them to back off. They did.

97 percent graduation rate. Thompson's best stat.

I never got a chance to attend the Big East Tournament....With that said, I remember that story well. Actually, it was a DC drug kingpin name Raful Edmond who was getting a little too close to Alonzo Mourning and John Turner. John Thompson wasn't having it. He drove through the hood, searching for Edmond. Edmond heard Thompson was looking for him and they met up. Thompson told him to stay away from his athletes and Edmond did just that.

Thompson was fearless and had an unconditional love for his kids...

I remember getting a chance to meet him after a game during the 2003-2004. I think the opponent was Howard. Georgetown liked to schedule soft in the beginning of the year. A family friend had a connection to the athletic department and got us into the media area after the game. Everyone was feeling good because it was a win. I met Craig Esherick, the coach at the time and he commented on how much he liked my Knicks Patrick Ewing jersey. Nice guy but St. John's is my Big East team, so I was like whatever. But Big John, who was doing the game broadcast, overheard the conversation, turned and said 'you got good taste.' I was awestruck. Dude was a mountain. He was as friendly as could be, but you could tell how this guy could demand respect from the likes of Ewing, Mourning and Iverson hahaha He signed the jersey, which is still sitting unwashed in my closet, spoke to us for a while and left. One if my best sports memories. The man kept it real, maybe too real at times, but he was great man and this is a great loss. RIP Big John. The legacy he left will be felt forever.

Thats right it was Mourning. Knew it was a drug dealer. Actually was at Mourning's graduation. I knew someone graduating. Mourning wore jeans, very casual lol. Thompson was there, Mutombo (dont remember if Ewing was there) People kept asking Mutumbo for an autogrsph. Smiled, kept saying in his deep voice "oh no!" and would sign them.
