So now we have the draft positioning sorted and likely we'll only add a decent role player, has it impacted whom you want in free agency? What salary dumps would you take on?

https://hoopshype.com/2020/01/20/nba-free-agency-2020-the-top-players/

I just want 2 way, decent, competent players from now on while the coaches focus on developing our young players. Players I'm still interested in:

Point Guards:

Fred VanVleet- we desperately need a PG, we likely won't get one in the draft and he fits what I want from signings- can shoot decently from 3, plays good defence, is clutch. Nothing fancy or spectacular. Doubt Raptors let him walk.

Likely we'll have to settle for stop gaps like: Dragic, DJ Augustin

Or we just commit to Frank or DSJr as starting PG and wait until next draft.

Shooting Guards:

I wanted Joe Harris, but there is no chance of that. However, maybe Malik Beasley might be an option now the Twolves can pick Edwards. Only if cheap though.

Small Forwards:

If Bulls draft Deni, I'd take on Otto Porter as a salary dump (I'm moving Knox to PF so we need a SF and the free agent options are terrible)

Power Forwards

Hopefully we can dump Randle, though I doubt it. If we do, I'd consider:

Bertans, Jerami Grant. Maybe Gallo.

Slim pickings! But we need hard workers who don't try to be more than they are.

I would try to move Spinarooni first then see who is available for us in the draft. Then go from there. I would only try to get shooters.

Is Marcus Morris an option? i can see a return

i have a tough time seeing Randle on this team;

for pg i don't expect anything flashy. i expect the offense to run through RJ anyway.

and i still expect AD

I left him out as I don’t think he’ll return if he plays well in the playoffs and the clips do well. Also his brother is worth considering

Weak draft, weak free agency, setting us up for a boring season

Only interesting action will be if teams have to dump salary

Some of the strongest drafts end up being quite weak... and some of the weakest drafts end up being quite weak. And others take a little while to develop. One such draft is 2016 - the Ben Simmons draft. That 2016-2017 rookie class was so bad that Malcolm Brogdon (pick #36) was ROY.

This year may be known as the late bloomer draft. Ben Simmons obviously is quite good (though he was a 2017-2018 rookie), but this was ultimately supposed to be the year of the bust. However, with a little bit of time and seasoning, these players have really stepped up and look like young stars. Brogdon is still quite good and getting better at age 27 (16.5ppg, 7apg, 5rpg), but all of the guys below perhaps have equaled or surpassed his impact:
* Brandon Ingram
* Jaylen Brown
* Jamal Murray
* Domantas Sabonis
* Caris LeVert

Honorable mention to Malik Beasley who played for a beast for 14 games this year after move to the Wolves from Denver. (how was he supposed to shine with Murray developing alongside him?)

Brogdon is a relatively ancient age 27 and still stacks up pretty well in terms of impact compared to some of his draftmates - but agewise, most of the others are only 22 or 23!

I agree with smackeddog - it could get interesting if we see salary dumps all around. We're in the perfect position to take on some high reward castaways that don't fit on their teams.

With Minn likely drafting either Ball or Edwards, i love the idea of stealing Beasley. He's a young, high level shooter who fits nicely next to Barrett.

definitely would like Morris back

I would rather get rid of Knox, Frank, and Peyton as oppose to Randle.

Thibs, his staff, better shooters, gets you a much more productive Randle.

I Really think they are going to purge this roster anyway, and wouldn't they

There's no way Detroit let Woods walk- they have nothing on their roster, they need to retain any bit of talent they have, they'll pay up whatever it takes.

I don't see how a front court rotation of Woods, Mitch and Randle works, especially with no PG and no shooting outside of Nesmith.

Just checked, if you thought 2020 free agency was bad, wait until you see unrestricted free agency in 2021- absolute trash (unless I'm missing something?). Realistically the only big names likely to move are: 29yr old Rudy Gobert (I could see us signing him if Mitch doesn't pan out), Giannis (no way he comes here) and Oladipo (greatly diminished form his injury, and no way he comes here). Maybe AD depending on what he decides to sign this offseason (again no way he'd come here).

Look at the list:

https://hoopshype.com/2019/09/19/nba-free-agents-in-2021/

Makes handing out multiyear (or taking on multiyear) contracts have less downside to me, especially with all the shooting available. I don't want a repeat of the inflated 1 year deal thing we tried this year (and Perry tried with the Kings the year before to equally terrible results).

Multiyear deals mean the players acquired are less likely to worry about their stats and are more likely to share the ball and play team ball (hopefully). I do think there would be some good, role player bargains this offseason as teams won't want to risk finances for just role players for what is likely going to be a weird season.

Generally speaking FA -- and especially so for the elite players -- is not a good vehicle to build a team around. Guy is going to make max or near max money everywhere

NY can offer glamour and being a hero if they win, but they have to pay higher taxes and at least in the recent past deal with a dysfunctional franchise which in most instances rightfully gets no respect because they put idiots like Mills in charge, then you have to also contend with recent history of massive losing (and the good guys by definition are almost always used ot massive winning)

It's a better vehicle for situational, short term needs, e.g., depth, That said, because i'm a glutton for punishment (i guess) i still harbor hopes that AD still wants to be here and out of Lebron's shadow, grandstanding

Mills and Perry's 2019 plan of building a team by overpaying mid-tier at best FA (Randle, Portis, Morris [though he panned out) would be the stupidest decision in recent Knicks history (where there is a lot of competition for stupidest) if it werent for the KP trade, which will be one of those records that is never broken. And this doesn't even get into the fact that all of those overprices guys played essentially the same position so you couldn't squeeze value out even if you hit on those signing

You appear to be ignoring all the stars with player options. Much could change based on player locking in extensions and the proposals for cap smoothing. James, Leonard, George...

Target CP3, Hayward(convince agent to opt out for 3 yr deal) & Gallo 2 yr deal. They would be a pretty strong group of players around RJ Barrett & Mitch with complimentary skills. Ball movement would be excellent. Which would most likely become a playoff team especially in another shorten season.

Because no stars with player options are coming here- have you not been following this team for the past 20 yrs?! This obsession/delusion with signing stars stops us from actually building a team and making smart low key FA signings.

Hold on. I haven’t made a single comment about the plausibility of NY signing superstars. You explicitly stated that the entire 2021 UFA class is trash. That is untrue. There are multiple players on player options that may opt into UFA next year. The class is not trash, that is patently false. There is a strong case for a “taking my talents to South Beach” alliance next year. Especially if a team like Brooklyn gels and puts together a chip. You can’t see Giannis putting together a squad in San Antonio? Or Kawhi moving to Dallas? Portland making a move for Anthony Davis? Economically, it nearly never makes sense for “stars” to change teams, but it happens more and more often as the players seek to pair and triple up to win a chip and franchises are forced to accommodate to preserve assets.
