August 5th is a special date on the Knicks fan calendar: the birthday of franchise legend Patrick Ewing. It is a day to remember the best of times, when the Knicks were good and feared, when the big man would intimidate at the rim, dominate in the post, and...make it rain from three?

The Knicks’ Twitter account — which has been much better of late! — celebrated Pat’s birthday with a fun montage of the big Hoya shooting threes.

Ewing only shot 19-125 from three in his entire career — a paltry 12.5 3P%. He hit no threes at all in 10 of the 17 seasons he played in the NBA. But he had fine shooting form. He was a 74.0% free-throw shooting and was notoriously wet with the mid-range J. Here’s a tasty 17-minute YouTube video of nothing but Ewing jumpers. You’re welcome.

Ewing also hit perhaps the biggest three in franchise history: the turnaround fall-away triple that sank the Boston Celtics in a do-or-die Game 5 at the old Boston Garden in 1990. Yes, there was a time when the Knicks were in the playoffs, ripping the hearts of Larry Bird and his legion of green goblins.

Happy birthday, big guy. Go shoot a couple of threes at your local gym, just to celebrate.

Yea I guess he was. When I first became a fan, it was in this era, and Ewing was very good, very good teams. Different world back then, in the real world and in the basketball game, those were some rough and tumble days in the NBA league
