10-14) 19:03 PDT WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) --

Jamal Crawford had 19 points, and the New York Knicks scored the first 21 of the fourth quarter to defeat the New Jersey Nets 92-84 Thursday night in the exhibition opener for both.

Making his Knicks debut after being acquired from the Chicago Bulls in an offseason trade, Crawford hit two 3-pointers in the game's opening moments and another in the fourth quarter as New York turned a 74-63 deficit after three periods into a 85-74 lead with 3:11 left.

Vin Baker and Michael Sweetney keyed the run for the Knicks. Baker scored seven points, including a layup with 7:30 left that gave the Knicks a 76-74 lead. Sweetney made five of six free throws and found an open Baker to assist on the go-ahead basket.

The Nets didn't score a fourth-quarter point until rookie guard Alex Scales hit a free throw with 3:11 left, and New Jersey didn't make a basket until rookie forward Darius Rice hit an 18-foot jump shot with 1:28 to go.

Led by nine points from Richard Jefferson, the Nets took control in the third quarter, taking a 74-63 lead after the game was tied 47 at halftime. Jefferson, who led the Nets with 18 points, turned in two highlight-reel plays during the quarter.

First, he finished off an alley-oop pass from Zoran Planinic with a reverse dunk to put the Nets up 57-51 with 8:35 left. Later, he took a no-look pass from Jacques Vaughn, made a layup while being fouled and hit the ensuing free throw to put the Nets up 67-57 with 3:53 to go.

Forward Brian Scalabrine added 10 points for the Nets.

Kurt Thomas had 14 points for the Knicks. Rookie guard Trevor Ariza added 12 points, including eight in the fourth quarter.

Knicks forward Tim Thomas and Nets center Jason Collins were in the starting lineup, but the discord between them showed no signs of flaring up. Collins knocked Thomas out of the playoffs with a hard foul in Game 1 of the first-round series between the teams last season, igniting a war of words that has continued this preseason.

Jason Kidd, recovering from knee surgery, and Alonzo Mourning, making a comeback after a kidney transplant, did not accompany the Nets to Wilkes-Barre.

I think there's a good chance Ariza can be ahead of penny in the depth chart as the season goes along. I don't see him starting over Tim Thomas though. I think with Houston out and Crawford starting Penny pshould play backup PG and Ariza backup SF.

Recap --- NEW YORK 92, NEW JERSEY 84

10/14/2004--

WILKES-BARRE, Pennsylvania (Ticker) -- Jamal Crawford made a pretty good first impression for the New York Knicks.

Crawford had 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists in his New York debut and the Knicks scored the first 21 points of the fourth quarter to defeat the New Jersey Nets, 92-84, in the preseason opener for both teams.

Wearing No. 11 in honor of Knicks president Isiah Thomas, Crawford led four players in double figures. The Knicks acquired Crawford as part of a six-player sign-and-trade in August that sent Dikembe Mutombo and Othella Harrington to the Chicago Bulls.

New York, which was swept by New Jersey in the opening round of the playoffs last spring, jumped out to a 29-19 lead after the first quarter. The Nets regrouped to take a 74-63 lead into the final period but went 8:49 before getting their first point of the quarter on a free throw by Alex Scales.

New Jersey missed its first 16 shots of the period before rookie Darius Rice sank a jumper with 1:32 remaining. Rice had seven of New Jersey's 10 fourth-quarter points.

Kurt Thomas, who was injured in the playoff opener on a flagrant foul by Jason Collins, chipped in 14 points for the Knicks. Rookie Trevor Ariza scored 12 and Stephon Marbury added 10.

Richard Jefferson scored 18 points in three quarters and Brian Scalabrine added 10 for the Nets.

ariza should be in the dunk contest. In the 4th, he had a breakaway reverse dunk in transition. It was off the chain! Good game for him on both sides, Crawford, for the most part, Sweetney (11 boards) real good, and KT. However, I wish we could see Barrett and Mongolian man instead of Norris.

i think what we can take out of that game is we avoided a disastrous start. If somehow we lost to that AWFUL and I mean AWFUl team--even in pre-season by double digits--i wouldve been frightened.

Still there was good and bad. There was less cohesion that I anticpated. We are obviously small and a big thing that scares me with this team is that other teams will be able to penetrate at will.
All of this talking by TT and it looks like the same old TT. Lets face some facts with what we have up front. We have guys who are inconsistent. And I guess its good we have 5-6 guys who can play upfront. KT looked smooth and after that type of performance-the knicks wont move him. MS needs to use more force when driving his shot up. hes a smaller guy in terms of height--lets give him 6-7--he cant hold the ball by his waste and go up. Jamal looked good--he is known for taking bad shots at times but we havent had a guy who can put up numbers all across the board. Nazr and TT will be painfully inconsistent.
Ariza will have some explosive moments, no doubt about that. he has a little dominique in him.

we can say this is the first pre-season game yadyada but anyone can plainly see some real good stuff and some real defeciencies.

i will stand by the statement that the nets are the worst team in the nba worse than atlanta and even charlotte

Gerald Wallace is going to be good this year in terms of stats.
Sweetney didn't do that bad, 7 points 11 rebounds off the bench is fine for me!

Ariza's really impressing me. I wasn't sure how he'd play against NBA level players, but his box score #s look pretty good. Was he being guarded by RJ? If so, that makes it even more impressive

I saw most of the second quarter, while riding the bike at the gym tonight. Penny pretty much looked like the same guy he was last season. Nice role player off the bench for maybe 20 minutes.

Sweetney got in shape, but he still has to learn to go up with the ball, like Briggs said. It's a tough thing to do in the post, especially in the NBA.

Tim Thomas touched the ball a lot, but he didn't really do much, and they were definitely trying to get him to score. He had a nice dunk in someones face, on a fast break, however, but you'll get that from him. Timmy has some proving to do. He's still a fugazy in my mind. I see the boxscore and he played over 20 minutes but only grabbed 2 rebounds. Sorry, but there is no excuse for that. I looked at him shooting a free throw, and his shoulders are so big and the guy is just huge. How doesn't he grab 8- 10 a game and be a LOCKDOWN defender? He just makes you wonder, in those categories.

Jerome was impressive. We have to give him minutes. He's all over the place, and he takes it to the rim pretty nicely too. Good guy to have on the team.

Only saw KT for a couple of minutes, but he played well. He posted up and hit a nice turnaround J right in the defenders mug. He looked a lot like Allan Houston doing that.

Jamison Brewer moves around nicely. He's no star, but he can be a nice player in the future. I like the hair.

Moochie still has the ugliest looking jump shot I have seen in my life. I can shoot better than him.

I didn't see any of Baker, Nazr and Jamal, as well as Marbury.

We definitely need Houston back, b/c that team can definitely go on offensive scoring droughts and we don't really have that many good jump shooters, besides when Marbury goes crazy or if Jamal gets hot. And for the most part, we were in a huge offensive scoring drought, for most of the 2nd quarter. And I see Jamal scored 19 points but only 4-12 shooting or so. It's great he's playing the all around game, but he needs a little shot discipline still. That will come in time, hopefully.

Briggs is right. We have our highs and lows. The team defense looked good, but it was just bad in the interior, at times. It will be an interesting and fun season.

How about Jarvis Hayes? 31 points, 14 rebounds. 9-9 from the line. He took an awful lot of shots though, even in preseason. 26 shots.

I'm skeptical about TT, but I agree that reaching definitive conclusions, either positive or negative, based on one pre-season game is not productive.

Briggs, based on what you said, if you really feel that way then Minny must be in trouble. They barely got past Atlanta tonight (99-96). Should they be at a point where they should keep their finger by the panic button? Is that how you feel after one preseason game?

Jamison Brewer moves around nicely. He's no star, but he can be a nice player in the future. I like the hair.

I liked the way he ran the point. He showed good leadership skills too. Every break in the game he was talking to somebody about something in the game. His defense was good too from base line to base line. I definately like him.

Ariza basically proved he can play and be in the rotation. His defense was just as good as his offense.

Crawford was doing it all.

Overall I like what the Knicks were trying to do. They started and finnished the game well. That little lapse in between I think was due to the weird mix of players that were in the game.

Sweetney must have opposing teams scared cuz they were triple teaming him like crazy. They tried to make him pass and he beat them a few times with his good vision.

I'm officially hyped up about this season. The Nets suck.....can't wait till they get a better apponent.

I like your view....Timmy looked uninterested and not as focused as the rest of the people on the floor. I know it's pre-season but tell that to the Wizards and Bobcats. Ball is ball no matter if you are playing for a NBA Championship or againsts a team of migets and tards.

Marbs played well with Craw at the start. I like how they were running the offense. They both were focused and seemed to feed off each other well. I think the rest of the team feed off that.

Nazr seemed in shape but he's not very smart. There was one play where he was running back on defense and gave Collins a elbow check to his back then shoved Scalabrine to the floor. Of course that was his second foul in the first few seconds of the game. Stupid.

Vin to me looked slow and confused. He still can finish well when he gets it around the basket but he just looks like he wanted to take a nap or something.
