Nets; Jefferson: Realistically, Tim Thomas is all talk
Thursday, October 07, 2004
BY DAVE D'ALESSANDRO
Star-Ledger Staff
In one moment, Richard Jefferson said he'd prefer to stay out of the churlish conflict between the Knicks' Tim Thomas and former Net Kenyon Martin, now with the Denver Nuggets.

In the next moment, he found it hard to resist offering an opinion on how a physical confrontation would turn out, which Thomas has been promoting since last spring.

"Kenyon is no longer my teammate, so I will not say anything to stir things up," Jefferson said yesterday. "But let's be real. All I'm going to say is, let's be real. Kenyon versus Tim Thomas?"

It was at that point that Jefferson made a face, the same one he'd make watching Mussolini's tank divisions smash the Egyptian cavalry.

"I'm not saying who'd win," he said. "I'm not saying, 'Poor Tim Thomas,' or 'Poor Kenyon.' The one thing I will say is, 'Let's be real.'"

Jefferson admitted he felt bad that Thomas couldn't play in last year's playoff series between the Nets and Knicks after being clobbered in midair by Jason Collins in Game 1. But he also believed that Thomas' remarks revealed he wanted no part of the Nets.

"You never want to see someone go out of a series like that," Jefferson said. "But if you recall his statements, saying, 'They can't stop you, so they try to take you out' -- he had 12 points with four minutes to go, and the game was pretty much over with.

"So, obviously, I would have to say he was probably rooting for us to sweep the Knicks, so he wouldn't have to play again later in that series. A lot of people talk, but we'll see when they play the Denver Nuggets

RJ just needs to shut his mouth too...i'm sick of reading his comments in the papers...how about YOU accomplish something in this league before you open your mouth too, RJ? TT needs to shut up, & so do you.

this whole thing is media generated fodder. There are 100 great hoops stories around camp, yet we get this CRAP. Imagine caring. I cant wait for this stupidity to just go away.

Richard Jefferson is the embodiment of everything I hate about the Nets and their fans. Clueless, not knowledgable, not wise and not practical. If Richard Jefferson thinks his team will even compete with any other team in the league this year he is mistaken. Not only are they missing K-mart but Kidd will be out for half he year too. I want to see TT take RJ to school and he will in the first pre-season. Richard Jefferson is NOT GOOD!! Now Richard Jefferson is talking, LETS BE REAL!!
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

I am loving this feud. Richard will have to face TT a few times this season, maybe that will feul TT to prove that he is the man in the Eastern conference. Richard plays 4 quarters, TT has yet to prove that he can do that. I like his game, but this season he has to come out and prove to all the SF/PFs that he is the man.

I agree, better that he wants to show up the Nets than someone he plays maybe once a season.Id also like to see how RJ does without Kidd spoon feeding him the ball didnt look so hot in the olympics.

Richard is a true Dick. Let's be real.

Really Dick is short for Richard, right. No need to moderate me.

His name for now on to me is Dick Jefferson.

Follow my lead.

OK - true test though. Who would you rather have at SF for the Knicks? For me - no contest. RJ. Much better player than TT.

RJ's a better player, but his mouth is just as big as TT's...i just find it moronic of him to be spouting off about TT being all talk when he's got 1 of the biggest mouths in the league...

bottomline, SHUT UP & play some BALL!

Nah he's not that much better if he's even better at all.

Dick is just relentless in running the break and on his drives. He's not that good. The olympics proved that.

Timmy without even thinking about it has a better shooting touch, and post game. Timmy's in between game is also better than Dick.

there is no way I would say that RJ is better than TT. they are both good, TT just has to explore his explosiveness.

I wish Gazy was professional about matters that he IS playing to his potential and we don't need to HOPE that immature verbal barbs are what he needs to get going.

He should be there already.

Richard (or "dick" for those 7th graders) at his age is way ahead of TT in terms of progress. Without Kid, we get to see how he his new roll works.

We need to stop making excuses for TT.

RJ is so much better then TT right now its not even funny. Please people come on. I love TT's game and think he will be a perfect fit here, but RJ is simply a better player, ESPECIALLY on the defensive side of the ball.

Yeah I know, we would have been so lost without him in the olympics.

Ha Ha Ha!!! He is also crossed eyed. He needs to get that checked. Maybe he will be able to hit an outside shot once in awhile.

Give me a break... so we would be better off with Ginobili than Marbury or Iverson right? See what happens when you take a bunch of slashers and tell them to shoot jumpers. You may not like him but he's done a lot more in 3 years than TT has done in 7

RJ is much better. TT has potential and so far not much more. Yes the Olympic team wasn't very good - but how many players would have had to go down before TT would have made it.
