ARIZA IMPRESSES WILKENS

By MARC BERMAN

October 7, 2004 -- KNICK NOTES

CHARLESTON — As rookie Trevor Ariza continued shooting drills 30 minutes after the rest of the Knicks had left the court, Lenny Wilkens nodded in his direction and said, "We can't get him off the court."

Wilkens is enthralled by Isiah Thomas' first Knick draft choice. In Tuesday's first scrimmage, Ariza made another impression. Ariza, the slashing 6-7 UCLA swingman, drove to the basket and was knocked down by Kurt Thomas. A possession later, Ariza went right at Thomas again and converted. "I want him to respect the veterans but don't be in awe of them," Wilkens said. "That's the attitude you have to have."

A source said Ariza will make the 12-man active roster and could see spot duty in the rotation. Not bad for the draft's 43rd pick.

Exactly what we need. Kurt protecting the basket, Ariza competiting for playing time. This is a great atmosphere for training camp, in my opinion. Make the players play tough through, don't let them coast.

Knicks owner James Dolan arrived here last night to witness the team with the league's highest payroll . . . Nuggets' Kenyon Martin wants no part of Tim Thomas' latest challenge to a boxing match: "I ain't got time to comment on that. I don't have time for games."

While Kurt Thomas scoffed at the idea of Michael Sweetney taking his starting job, the former Georgetown star is keeping it low key. "If I end up starting, I do. If not, it's no big deal. Everybody here wants to start, but my goal is to just win games."

Heat could sign Shandon Anderson if Knicks waive him.

I like his attitude. Thats really thinking for the team. He could wind-up in the starting lineup because of his improvement and his talent, but everything is fine for him if he just gets the chance to help the team in any possible way. I really like that about him.

there's no way Ariza will be good enough this year to threaten Tim Thomas's job. maybe in a couple of years

The quote was about Sweetney wanting to win more than to start. I do wish the best for Ariza and expect him to become a very important player for us in the future but I was talking about Sweetney not having a problem with starting or being a backup because he only wants to win. I like that for the team work.

About Thomas, he will be working for a contract extension soon so I think thats the point about Ariza. Thomas has to really become the player he can be to have the contract extension he wants. If he doesn't and Ariza shows a lot of improvement for his second or third season, Thomas may not be needed. Of course, a LOT has to happen and we haven't even played a game this season so its all speculation. We'll see what happens with them but right now Im more interested in the improvement of Sweetney.
