Potential DPOY candidate in the future. Don't think he will be an All Star unless he's an injury replacement. I don't think it would take too much to be the 2nd best rim protector in the game with a lot of hard work.
He needs a lot of skill work ( footwork, handle, court vision, long range shooting, free throw shooting, etc)
The positive is he's a naturally intuitive player around the rim. He's productive even when his fundamentals could use more work. Some things will get better with time ( better calls from refs, better understanding of his competition by seeing them more and more, his body will fill out a little more) I don't know if the shooting will get better. At minimum, his free throw shooting needs work. He's a late game liability otherwise.
He can flat out fly across the court. That sticks out immediately.
OK so coaching a player like this, in any sport really, you want to focus on the 2 or 3 things that will create the most exponential impact in his game. You can't have a guy work on everything all at once all the time. Some parts of your game, you have to let go because of diminishing returns for the time/blood spent. I would say he immediately needs to hone down on his footwork. Because many of the other issues in his game will shift with improved footwork. Working on his free throw shooting would also help him at different levels of the game. His usage really needs to be metered for longevity. Big man health is just a really different animal at the NBA level.
His bread and butter will be defense and there's no reason, with relentless work and blood spilled, why he can't be a DPOY contender year in and year out in the future.
