Not so fast, he seems to interview at near mythical levels, maybe he came across as chief collaborator in the interview (despite his terrible record in that regard)

I wouldn't be surprised if the Knicks prefer Thibs as coach and are trying to convince Atkinson to come on as a top assistant. I'm assuming Miller would be happy just to be on bench next year in whatever role.

I don't know the landscape of what other coaching opportunities are out there but from Atkinson's point of view, you nab a spot and contract now, you don't have to move family during COVID times. What other state is doing better than NY for the coming year? And what kind of season will there be next year anyway? He simmers for a year or 2 while getting paid and not taking all the head coaching heat (and probably at a more than top assistant pay range) and then gets to play the long game with his choice of teams? Family is close and safe and sound. Maybe?

And if Thibs fails? He's right there.

Could be win-win-win for Atkinson

Thibs team clearly feeding Berman info.

Regarding the other point, just how much money have we paid people NOT to work for us over the years- Fiz, Fisher, Phil Jackson- we've cut huge checks! Going back to Larry Brown, the figures are ridiculous!

Thing is, I think Atkinson wants a hc position while his value is high. The feedback he got when he was fired from the nba circle was an indicator of how a good coach he is. Openings to in teams in the bubble can happen, so that puts him in a better position record wise.

If I was the knicks, I'd sign a coach ASAP

Now I'm confused. Ian Begley just reported the the knicks will be conducting more head coaching interviews next week, i don't think Thibs is a shoe-in for the job! Unless they decide to give everyone a third round of interviews. Are the front office asking these coaches a detailed plan for their first year if hired?

I read on the front page that Thibs might have his team picked for him. As a condition of getting the job. If its true. Thibs might balk, if he gets another offer. Rose might be planning for that.

Or he is looking at a plan B with a young coach. Believe he has a better chance of getting Dolan to be patient. Believe Dolan will expect things to move faster with Thibs.

An update on where things stand with the Knicks coaching search: per league sources familiar with the matter, New York is not in contract negotiations with any candidate and has not made a contract offer to any of the candidates it has interviewed.

The Knicks are continuing to do their due diligence and there is a strong likelihood that they will have conversations with multiple candidates next week, per SNY league sources.

It remains likely that the club will hire a coach by the end of the month, prior to the NBA resuming its regular season in Orlando.

“They’re still exploring their options,” a league source familiar with the Knicks’ process told SNY.

Agents and coaches with a vested interest in the Knicks’ search have long believed that Tom Thibodeau is the coach most likely to be hired by Knicks president Leon Rose. The Knicks have interviewed 11 candidates for the job. All candidates are believed to have interviewed twice over Zoom calls.

Sports Illustrated reported that Kenny Atkinson interviewed with the club on Monday. That was believed to be Atkinson’s second interview.

The idea that the Knicks haven’t made a contract offer to any candidate suggests that Thibodeau’s hire isn’t as much of a foregone conclusion as the coaches and agents referenced above thought. That they may be talking to candidates again next week also tells you the Knicks haven’t fully settled on Thibodeau.

The Knicks are said to be taking a diligent approach with their search.

In addition to Thibodeau and Atkinson, the Knicks have interviewed Lakers assistant Jason Kidd, former Knicks coach Mike Woodson, Golden State assistant Mike Brown, Bulls assistant Chris Fleming, Dallas assistant Jamahl Mosley, San Antonio assistant Will Hardy, Philadelphia 76ers lead assistant Ime Udoka and Orlando Magic assistant Pat Delany.

Rose and Thibodeau have a close relationship, and Thibodeau also has a solid relationship with Knicks executive vice president and senior advisor William “World Wide Wes” Wesley.

With regards to other candidates, Atkinson, Kidd and Woodson have strong ties to the organization and significant support from some at Madison Square Garden. Additionally, Rose was impressed by interim head coach Mike Miller during the brief time that he got to work alongside him in March.

There is some internal support at the Garden to adding Miller and/or Woodson on the next coaching staff, regardless of who the head coach is, per league sources.

Rose, Wesley, GM Scott Perry and Vice President of Basketball and Strategic Planning Brock Aller have been among the group of Knicks participating in the interviews, per SNY sources.

Me too, but I wish Thibs people hadn't blitzed the media from day one, it's made the process look more confusing than it actually is.

I'm quietly hoping the plan is to assemble most of the associate coaches from the people interviewed- would love a bench made up of bright, next gen up and coming future coaches.

According to Berman, Thibs is happy to have Rose pick his bench (though would like some of his mainstays)

Have we ever rush to hire a coach?

11 candidates were interviewed before fiz was hired

Phil wanted only coaches interested in running the triangle

Walsh hiring MDA who had avg 50+ wins for 4 season straight before quitting the suns.

The knicks always seem to hire a decent guy, then give him nothing to work with and fire him because they couldn't elevate marginal talent

I hope the assistant coaches of thibs if hired are: Miller, a young and upcoming coach who played for him before, 2 assitants of his choice, and an established player development coach.

https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-rumors-jason-kidd-now-frontrunner-for-coaching-job-as-things-get-messy-with-tom-thibodeau/

My worse case scenario for the knicks head coaching hire is starting to materialize. Of all the candidates the knicks have lined up Jason Kidd is the last person i want for the job. I really hope these are just BS reporting coz all they want is reader traffic. Reporters say that the knicks have not entered in any negotiations for the post, then this news emerges, Dolan is not giving in to Thibs' contract request so now, Kidd is their top choice! Come on! Really? Why do i have a bad feeling a Kidd hire will be the headline before the month end! Wake up Rose, Kidd CAN NOT BRING the Greek Freak to New York! Stop day dreaming!

I will be happy with Thibs, Kenny or woodson. I will be very disappointed with a Kidd hire. For me he didn't show anything when he was the head coach of the Nets and a stocked Bucks team. What will he do with a messy knicks line up.

Ohh please not kidd. You see bucks fans screaming when they see his game plan and schemes. The only benefit I see with kidd is with RJ, but you do that as an assistant coach.

If Thibs is really out, I'd go with Atkinson or Miller

So it's Thibs, all candidates have had their second interview- oh no, wait it's Kenny- he's just been interviewed for the third time- no, Kenny's just been interviewed for the second time (even though we said they'd all be interviewed a second time already) and Thibs is still in the lead. It's basically Thibs job and they're just negotiating. No wait- no offers have been made and there are no negotiations! Actually it might be Cal, but it's Thibs job to lose. Actually no, Thibs HAS been in negotiations and they've gone badly and now it's Kidd. Oh, actually it might be Mike Miller!

This Kidd news is creating such a stir. People are starting to make fun of the knicks, and Kidd hasn't been hired yet! These reporters are surely getting some milage out of this.

The only acceptable way for Kidd to be part of the coaching staff is as an assistant nothing more. But i hope he just stays with the Lakers, please!
