I've been a basketball fan for a few decades and honestly I never heard the term "downhill" before like a year ago. Now I hear it thrown around like everyday. Can someone give a good definition of the term?

I think the downhill you are referring to is end to end speed. Someone’s ability to get downhill is to get out on the break.

Feel like I heard this term starting at least 5 years ago, especially with LeBron.

Prob lots of different descriptions but for me it's when offensive player has a running start with ball towards defense and rim. Think Harden starting at the 3 point line and getting a head of steam. Or LeBron on a fast break. Defense is back-peddling and really at mercy of offense.

Randle may not be adept at post position with back to basket about 15 feet out but face him up at 3 point line or around there and let him get some speed behind him towards rim and he is deadly.

You're right about how long it's been downhill! I've only really noticed it myself recently.

I want to say this came in from football and just better helps players understand attacking the basket in a straightforward manner instead of going left to right.

I think of downhill as getting the defender back pedaling.

It just means accelerate to your top speed really fast, as if you were running down a steep hill.

Triangle or 90's Knicks would be opposite of Downhill basketball.

I think the newer 3point spacing has lead to more downhill type basketball. Probably really started with with Nash handling and Amare going downhill with shooters all around.

Don't really like it.
There had to be a better term.

There's always some fancy new term the yapsters feel they need to overuse -- like in football "putting the ball on the ground" instead of "fumble".

Playing downhill to me means going north south instead of east west. Fizdale was offense that stupid 3 man weave going nowhere ****. Downhill is like what the Spurs do. Pass and cut. Always a player going to the basket.
