i know the new Celtics owners will tell him to take a flying F like they did to vin baker. those guys ran a top 5 hedge fund and are no-nonsense types. if you cant accept to honor your contract of 5.5 mm$ then you simply wont get paid. i know these ballplayers are rich--especially a guy like payton--but still 5.5mm$ is 5.5mm$ and honor is honor. If he doesnt play this year, he will have to accept playing for a million dollars or so the following year if he chooses to continue. If he plays and plays hard and well--there is no doubt he would be able to command another 2-3 years at 5-6 mm---thats a lot bread--but again this guy isnt going to be hurting for money in any scenario but he has no leverage here to force these owners into anything. they simply will not pay him and wont trade him

Seriously, Payton is severely underrated and underappreciated right now. The average fan will say, "He got schooled by Billups! He sucks! He's too old!" Which all may be partially true, but let's not forget this guy dropped his offensive game 3 notches to accomodate others (which is what a PG SHOULD do). On a pg-deprived team maybe like the Celtics, he can EASILY average 15 points, 7 assists, a few steals. EASILY. He is not too old, he is a very talented and smart player. After a good stat-improving year this year, I see a championship level team looking for his services right around what BRIGGS said, 5-6 million a year next year.

Payton's best days are behind him, but he can still be a good role player.

if he comes to the Celtcis and plays effeciently

i.e 15 points 8 assits 5 rebounds 1.5 steals shooting 45%

that *stabilizes the Celtics, takes TREMENDOUS pressure of Paul Pierce who can regain his 25 points 7 reb 6 assits form and cut down on the 3 balling+ add in 3 athletic rookies who are highly skilled athletic and talented+Lafrentz and thats a whole new ball club that stillwon 36 games last year.

I'm not so sure Payton can put those kinds of numbers up at this point.

He was the one that took the option for this year from the Lakers? He could have declined and been a free agent, no?

Payton probably couldn't have made that 5.5m this year if he was a FA, given his poor performance last year, especially in the postseason. He was probably hoping, without Shaq on the team, and with Fisher gone as well, to be the main PG for the Lakers & to increase his stats so he could get a 2-3yr MLE next offseason. Hey, he's a pro, it's his choice. If he dosen't show, forget him. Let him hold out and save the money. It was a cap clearing move for Boston anyway.

If anything, they could maybe trade him for an expiring contract of equal value and a pick.

payton should play havoc in beantown just because he can. add ricky davis, paul pierce and lafrentz (if healthy), boston is playoff bound.
its all about payton's place

Payton has carried Seattle on his back for yrs. He is one of those guys like Barkley & Ewing who deserve a championship. Im not suprised he doesn't feel like wasting a yr on a none championship calibre team.
