I have done this over the years. Put a dent in the can of bull shyt.
Knick history is mostly that of a not so good franchise with a few good eras.
Two of note.....1968-1974 and The Ewing-Riley-JVG era.
Other than that the “Mecca” was really born from the NIT in its glory, college double headers with blue chip schools and notable players galvanized into Rucker lore.
The Legacy Knicks with the elegant roster and ironic iconic underrated Clyde was the apex. That was 1973. If you missed 1974-5-6 DR J in Uniondale you missed a big deal.
Before my time Rucker legends Connie Hawkins was a big deal. City College of New York, LIU, St Johns, Fordham...all NY great teams at one time. That was the “Mecca”. TV ended the golden era. If College created the legacy so did UCLA out west do for LA. Lakers lost a lot of finals to the Celtics until they broke thru in 1972 and then showtime a decade later. The Mecca might really be Los Angeles. TV gave national exposure to Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke and others. St. John’s has drifted into irrelevancy.
Enough of the “Giannis” in two years nonsense. Knick fans get feed the media starphuch and the team cleared cap does not entitle us. KP was the one to grow. When he wanted out, I think Durant likely was open to other teams. When Durant went down, it was not a good idea for either of us. I’m not discussing the Nets and why it was good for them. Thats on them. KP was a huge set back for us. His injury and sense of entitlement. Time will tell if we were right or wrong. Not SAS or the Rainman ......it will be TIME.
Westbrook and Durant built massive brands in Oklahoma Fucking City. Don’t need NY to make money. In fact nobody came here to do that except Melo. Amare got offered 3 year max in PHX, and it took 5 to move him. Players don’t need to be here to build a brand. Jordan did it in Chicago. Build a Global iconic brand.
Being NY does not entitle anything. City has great fans. Oakland had great fans for years selling out the arena when losing. They built through the draft and opportunity turned to luck. Portland has great fans. Utah has great fans. The latter two are one sport towns but they have had long competitive teams for years.
Stop taking the bait that the “Worlds most famous arena” ENTITLES fans to winning. It does not. Support the team if it interests you and your entertained by them. They care if you buy tickets or watch them on tv. They care about their brand, but not like fans think they would.
I’m watching my young players. There is the hope. That RJ Barrett is good, Mitch is good, Frank is good and Knonx. Winning is what matters. Lakers do what they do, Nets do them, and Knicks need to take care of themselves.
We won 17 games last year. Let’s get to .500 before we have starphuch in our eyes.
