Has an advanced mid range game, shoots the 3, uses the eurostep well, is creative in transition and looks like a willing passer. Pretty much a complete package on O, just needs seasoning. Surprisingly clutch, he has ice in his veins, at least at the end of this game. Is very active on D. Came up with a crucial , momentum breaking steal in the end.

Human interest article on him. Turned 22 this past February.

Shaw University has one of the best small college basketball players in the country. Amir Hinton, Shaw University’s outstanding shooting guard from Abington High School leads all Division II in scoring. Hinton, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound junior, averages 34.9 points a game.

Hinton has been putting up huge numbers throughout the season. He has put together a number of sensational performances. He has scored over 40 points three times this season. He had a season-high 52 points in a 115-98 loss to Tampa on Dec. 19. He also had 49 points in 95-90 win over Barton College on Nov. 27.

Hinton is coming off another magnificent effort scoring 40 points on 15-of-21 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 from free throw line as Shaw University posted a 87-84 win over Johnson C. Smith in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association game on the road on Saturday. Putting the ball in the basket seems to come easy for him.

“For me, it’s just having fun and not really over thinking the game and not trying to make the game harder than what it is,” Hinton said. “I just like to play. I’m very comfortable with my game right now.”

Hinton plays for head coach Joel Hopkins who also coached former Strawberry Mansion star Ronald “Flip” Murray at Shaw University. Murray, a CIAA Hall of Famer, played 12 NBA seasons. Hopkins has coached his share of players from Philly. You can add Hinton to that list.

“First of all, he’s a great person,” Hopkins said. “He’s a high-character guy. It’s been a privilege to coach him. He’s a great kid. He’s Philly-tough. He’s a great student, an honor student. He’s a heck of a player. If I were to compare him to a guy, it would be [Miami Heat star] Dwyane Wade.”

Although Hopkins compares him to Wade, Hinton has been scoring like Houston Rockets star guard James Harden. He’s capable of scoring in bunches. In fact, Hinton’s exploits has attracted national attention.

“He knows how to score the ball,” Hopkins said. “He’s a great passer and defender as well. His upside is tremendous. His mid-range [game] is unbelievable. Nobody can really stay in front of him. His character and commitment to the game, he could easily have a great NBA career.

“ESPN is coming down. They’re going to do a big thing on him. A lot of scouts feel he might be the next best guard behind the kid [Ja Morant] from Murray State. He’s a big-time player.”

Hinton started his college basketball career at Lock Haven University where he scored 1,227 points in two seasons before transferring Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. He’d heard a lot about the CIAA, the country’s first African American collegiate sports conference and it’s spectacular postseason basketball tournament. Hinton, who grew up in the Olney section of the city, also found out about the history of Philly players starring at Shaw University.

“I know Flip [Murray],” Hinton said. “I actually got a chance to sit down and talk to him. I knew Savon Goodman [former Constitution High standout who played for Shaw University] as well. He’s from the [Philadelphia] area, too. I didn’t really know there was a lot of guys that went through Shaw. When I found out, I got to go down there and keep it going. Since I got down here, I loved the atmosphere and everything about it. The fans welcomed me with open arms. Everything about Shaw I love.”

Hinton is quite a story. He developed a lot of basketball talents playing in the playgrounds over the years.

“I tell people that everything I basically learned was street basketball and playground basketball,” Hinton said. “That’s all I grew up on. I feel like if you could play in the playgrounds, hard nosed on concrete, you’re getting fouled hard, if you can go through that you can play anywhere. That’s how Philly basketball is. That actually helped me playing with the older guys. They got me tough. I played at the Olney Recreation Center, that’s where I grew up. Every day that was my basketball court.”

Shaw has an 11-10 record overall, with a 6-6 mark in the CIAA and a 5-2 report card in the Southern Division. The Bears will visit Virginia State on Wednesday, Feb. 6. The Trojans are the No. 1 team in the CIAA Northern Division with a 19-3 overall, 11-0 conference and 5-0 division record. Hinton has faced a lot of tough defenses this season. He’s learned how to deal with the defensive pressure from the opposing teams.

“With me, what I try to do, is stay calm as much as possible and stay patient going into the games,” said Hinton, who averages 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists a game. “I understand teams are going to throw certain defenses at me. I watch a lot of film on different defenses that teams throw at me prior to the teams we play. I just pick and choose to see what spots are going to be open. My teammates make it easy for me when they double team me by knocking down shots.”

The CIAA basketball tournament will be held Feb. 25 to March 2 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Amir Hinton and the Shaw University Bears could be a major attraction for this postseason tourney.

The guy who did the analysis actually thought he was a 1st round talent, so you might take what he says with a grain of salt, but I thought he gave a legitimate good/bad report on Hinton.

Good player to take a flyer on. He and Iggy are both confident guys with a little swagger. Will be interesting to see how they carry this into the SL. Hinton especially, since he was the go to guy on his team & top scorer in DII. The guy who scouted him here makes a good point, "Is he able to be a 3rd, 4th, or 5th option? He hasn't had to do that in his career yet so that is yet to be seen.

Should be an interesting SL.

Amir Hinton is highly regarded as one of the best players in Division 2 basketball that we’ve seen in a very long time. Hinton has a great chance to be selected this year in the NBA Draft. The Philadelphia native plans on becoming the first player from Shaw University since Ronald ‘Flip’ Murray in 2005.

Hinton is a professional scorer and led the Division 2 in scoring (29.4). He is virtually unstoppable at every level of the court with his length and size. He has a solid jump shot from mid-range and has the ability to slash to the bucket at a very impressive rate. When slashing to the bucket he is very good at drawing contact. He leads the CIAA conference in free throws attempted (330) and free throws made (296). Hinton is patient and that has proven to help him on both ends of the court.

He has improved with his jump shot, though he must obtain a consistent three-pointer to become a solid pro in the Association. He has a solid over the shoulder turn around that has helped him become an ELITE scorer at the in-between game.

The CIAA player of the year is a solid ball distributor as well. It’s probably the most underrated part of his game as he has shown over the last two years. He has been asked to score so much that once he has more impressive talent around him he will be able to show his full repertoire. At this point, we still haven’t even seen his full capabilities.

Hinton is a solid defender and has the size at the guard position to become an above average defender. He proved that by leading his team in steals. The big difference between former NBA player and Shaw University alumnus Flip Murray and Amir is that Flip wasn’t the defender that Hinton is. He has a solid wingspan and impressive lateral quickness that helps him stay in front of faster guards as well as rebound the ball over taller opponents.

Amir Hinton has an above average ball handling ability which contributes to his quick crossovers and solid one-two moves that helps him create space so well. He has impressive upper body strength. Overall, Hinton’s game is quite comparable to a young Dwyane Wade from Marquette.

Weaknesses:

The Philly native must become a lot better at shooting the three point basket to find success at the next level. He finished the season shooting 29% from the three point line which just won’t cut it. He has, though, shown a solid touch from the corners. Hinton has a lower level of elevation on his shot and an interesting release that will worry a few people watching him for the first time.

He must become a smarter defender and if he does, he can become elite defensively. As mentioned, he is a good defender and has NBA length for the 2 guard, but he must become a smarter defender when defending on ball as he tends to cheat a little too much. Defending NBA level players is a whole other beast and he should be up for the challenge. Once he learns how to choose his spots when to reach and to make better reads, this shouldn’t be too big of an issue.

He is not the most athletic and that can occasionally work against him, but he has learned how to maintain consistency with his average athleticism for sure. The problem is that the NBA is completely different and it’ll take time for him to work around that difference in athleticism. The major risk with Amir is that we truly don’t know how good he would look or how he will fare with NBA level competition. Is he able to be a 3rd, 4th, or 5th option? He hasn’t had to do that in his career yet so that is yet to be seen.

Future Outlook:

I believe Amir Hinton could find his way into the first round in June’s draft. The problem for him is that he just doesn’t get as much exposure as the D-1 prospects. When it comes to consistency, there aren’t many more players that have shown that they are as reliable as Hinton. Amir must become a better defender and better three point shooter and prove that he can be a role player early on.

However with his size, defensive intangibles, and professional scoring, he is arguably a Top 20 prospect this season.

His J looks janky, but he seems to see the floor decently. Interesting prospect.
