Just look at the time line, either the Warriors medial staff are spectacularly inept or the org just didn't care because they thought he was leaving and wanted to milk him for one last chip:

1) Initial injury, nearly everyone thinks it's an achilles injury. Warriors claim its a mild calf strain, but are weirdly vague

2) A few weeks later Kerr admits injury is more serious than initial thought:

Golden State Warriors Coach Steve Kerr acknowledged Thursday night that Kevin Durant won’t be returning to the court anytime soon because of the strained calf he suffered in Game 5 of the team’s playoff series with the Houston Rockets last week. Durant hasn’t been cleared for on-court work, Kerr said, and won’t be evaluated again for another week. Suffice to say, he won’t be traveling to Portland with the team for Games 3 and 4 of the Western Conference finals on Saturday and Monday and almost certainly won’t be fit for Game 5 on Wednesday if it comes to that. Games 6 and 7, if necessary, seem doubtful, too.

“Hopefully he continues to progress, and he has made progress, but it’s a little more serious than we thought at the very beginning,”


3) After several week, expectation is KD will retrurn in game 3 or 4- doesn't end up happening, Kerr says he's no longer going to give any updates

4) Some people in the warriors org/ teammates start briefing against KD, making out he could play if he wanted to, pressuring him to return:

Kevin Durant's continued absence in the NBA Finals has reportedly started to wear on the Golden State Warriors—and not just on the court.

Sam Amick of The Athletic reported "irritation grew" in the Warriors locker room following Game 4's loss to the Toronto Raptors. DeMarcus Cousins, Kevon Looney and Andre Iguodala have been playing through injuries during these Finals, and players "simply didn't understand why [Durant] wasn't there."

Amick added that within the Warriors, expectation was that Game 5 was the earliest Durant could return. However, there was hope that he'd be able to make it onto the floor earlier than expected with their season essentially on the line.

"We're hoping [Durant] can play Game 5 or 6," Warriors coach Steve Kerr told reporters before Game 4. "And everything in between I've decided I'm not sharing because it's just gone haywire. There's so much going on, and so it doesn't make sense to continue to talk about it. He's either going to play or he's not.”

Again a weird cryptic comment by Kerr saying there's "so much going on"

5)As if by magic KD is now ready to practice, does one extremely brief one: One insider tweets it was very short and he couldn't have done much and he was first back in the locker room.

Jalen Rose witnesses the workout/practice and says KD looks no where near ready "it didn't go well on any level"

On top of that he's pictured with an ice pack clearly on his achilles. Another insider says they saw him being injected in the achilles earlier in the week:

6) As if by magic, Durant is now cleared to play WITH NO MINUTES RESTRICTION. Nearly every online medical opinion says that playing with a strained calf muscle (if you even buy that it was a calf injury and not an achilles strain) puts your achilles at risk. Yet the Warriors tell kerr there's no increased risk of him aggravating the injury or causing further damage. WTF?!?!

7) Kerr says he'll play in short bursts, then proceeds to play him for 12 of the first 14mins. What a surprise, KD tears his achilles.


Jesus, that's just messed up on so many levels. I think it was an achilles strain from the start- I find it hard to believe they missed that, or else why was he icing his achilles throughout the rehab? I find it hard to believe they'd miss the achilles injury (especially considering they were icing it and injecting him in the achilles area). But if they did know it was the achilles, why would they send him out AND claim there was no risk of further injury?

I'm still fuming about this, not just for the Knicks, but for KD- I think he got royally screwed so no wonder he was reportedly raging when he tore it (reports of him cursing out the Warriors org/owner)

Gross incompetence by medical staff
Gross indifference/lying by Warriors org because he was leaving

KD was relatively-OK til he tried to make a move off the dribble. He should've only been used as a decoy and floor spacer, take 10-12 threes. Hope you hit 4 or 5 of them.

But after a brief rest where they iced his previously loose and warmed up muscles he came back and tried to DO TOO MUCH.

Now even if he doesn't get hurt on that attempted dribble drive to the basket --- i figure Toronto would test him defensively and he would get hurt trying to guard his man OR get repeatedly TORCHED.

GS basically had one shot to use him. Should never have rested him then brought him back. They got just enough to survive. GS got everything out of Kevin that they could. Squeeaed out every dollar worth.

KD got his rings.

From every angle you see this situation, Golden State really stinks.

You have a player coming from an injury that took him out for a month. He hasn't had a real practice with the team. Suddenly he can come back and you are already playing with fire. Coach Kerr says he will play him sporadically, as a player returning from an injury should. And that is if he has the injury they said he had, the calf, and not the one most believed judging from his reaction to the injury, the Achilles.

What did Kerr actually do? Play Durant 12 of the first 14 minutes and not even adapt his game plan to his injured player, but playing him exactly like if he was healthy.

The result is known by all.

This was a terrible situation that had so many points that could've avoided all of this.

I dont see the point of this thread....calf strain or Achilles. They are separate injuries but the same muscle area....one needs the other. If one is weak. the other gets weaker.

What really happened to KD?

He spends too much time on his social media accounts...listening to every negative thing said about him.

He did a terrible job surrounding himself with Kawhi type personalities who dont give a damn about the organization or social media back lash.

If he's only healthy enough to be used as a decoy, then he shouldn't be playing!! Basketball is a game you play on instincts, and KD is more than a spot up shooter. He saw an angle to go the hoop, and made a move he's done thousands of times and it popped! Bottom line, he shouldn't have been out there, regardless of who made the final decision.

The situation is a matter of today's NBA. With player empowerment, the player gets to make the final decision. If Kevin Durant doesn't think he can go, Golden State doesn't medically clear him. I think Durant knew the risks and took a shot at playing anyway (which I think is the right move in the finals). The result is unfortunate, but I can be okay with the decision making process, especially from a team that needs to sign him again.

Teams hide injuries all the time in the NBA. There aren't reporting requirements so there's no incentive for Golden State to rule him out.

KD is an athlete and he has competitive juices going through him. He is set for life and he still has a opt in. He should have played. In his position even I would have played and everyone on this board would have played. Those that say they wouldn’t have are lying. Everyone can play this 20/20 game. It’s the finals you play for championships not for the money. If anything I have so much more respect for KD at this point than any other point of time.

What a load of crap- you argued before the injury he should play and I, and other posters said he shouldn’t because it wasn’t worth the risk. Because he took that risk, he played 12mins and now will miss tomorrow’s game and the one after that and all the regular season and playoff games next year, and will be diminished the rest of his career. Why was this years playoff run more important than the next 4 or 5 years of playoff runs?

Your thinking about money. I’ll argue it again and again. KD is a millionaire 150 times over. Look at you guys acting like a crime was committed. You probably don’t know this but KD has his own doctors evaluations along with GS’s doctors. But hey keep painting your narrative.

Long time reader and 1st time poster. I can't help but wonder if GS would have allowed him to return if he gave assurances that he'd opt in for next year. So my mind thinks that GS said, "F it, he may not be here anyway so what if he gets hurt". KD's fault in this is that he makes millions per year, spend some of that cash on a private 2nd opinion before returning

That's the only thing that makes sense. KD and the Warriors knew the initial injury was the achilles (micro tears or whatever), and the Warriors hushed it up to protect his free agency market, so KD went along with it.

so much revisionist history going on

everyone assumed from the outside it was an achiles injury when he first got hurt

the risk of making it worse and causing a full rupture was clear as day

warriors should not have let him play, even if he insisted

not to go too far off topic but it makes me respect Kawhi's intelligence all the more

He had a sense his quad was whacked in SA and didn't like the pressure etc he was getting from team. It's still affecting him but if he played more in SA with the injury (which seems to be what SA wanted) he could have suffered an analogous fate.

I suspect it was a very gray issue like a strain and they all took a calculated risk with his returning and it was as simple as that. Looked like a good move until he went down

I've always believed it was an achilles injury...Called this a cover-up from jump...Something never felt right with this injury. I'm shocked that Kerr said he was shocked that KD ruptured his achilles. I damn sure wasn't shocked and I'm sure there were a bunch of other people who are not doctors that weren't shocked either.
