Many say Sweetney will be the Knicks savior, that he'll play a huge part in solving this team's frontcourt agony it experienced since the good old Ewing/Oak days and that with Marbury, Crawford, and Ariza, he will bring the Championship back to NY one day... But can you realistically expect that sort of contribution from a guy who stands 6'8 playing amongst taller opponents? What? You think he'll be as good as Sir Charles was? Or, Brand? What about Oakley? Could his entire season's stats line look like any of the below players'? (stats taken from the players' best yr)
Charles Barkley 25-12-0.8
Elton Brand 20-10-2.0
Zach Randolph 20-10-0.5
Carlos Boozer 15-11-0.7
Charles Oakley 14-13-0.4
Danny Fortson 11-11-0.2
Wrong! Stop dreamin'. He'll be more like Robert Traylor...

I'd be happy if he reminds us of Oak...

He reminds me of Paul Silas. He has a much better offensive game than Oak did.

Barrel chested like Lonnie Shelton.

Sweets and Azira are over hyped sometimes.

And I hope I am wrong!

Geez man anything less than 11 and 11 and you're ready to write him off as Tractor? Give the guy some time. He's slowly but surely gonna get himself to a high level but it takes some guys some time and his college history showed slow steady progress all the way through. Believe me if he comes up with season stats of 9 and 7 I will still consider that perfect progress and still see him as a future star.

i think he has the ability to put up Boozer type numbers, but whether or not he'll get the minutes to do it is another question...that's why i want KT traded so badly.

What is this many say bull****....Ariza is a second round pick, and everyone is slating him in as a starter for the next 10 years. And lets not get to excited about Sweetney, he needs to drop 10 more pounds get quicker, improve his vert, outside range and come up with a move he can use.

Marbury hasn't won anything since high school and that includes a playoff game, so lets just wait and see what happens

Good enough for people to compare other players to him. That should be his goal.

The potential is there. Ariza showed the ability to score in the lane, post up, handle, pass, run the floor, dunk, and play defesne......dude hasn't shown he could shoot a jumpshot yet. He has alot to prove but he is better than alot of kids that I've seen at age 19.

Sweetney has alot of old school in his game. He has a nack for getting to the line. If given the opportunity he could get at least like 6-7 pts alone every night just off the foul line. Paul Silas is a good comparison. Willis Reed and Wes Unseld is another. Wayman Tisdale is also a good comparison. Sweetney getting at least 12 and 10 is not a reach he may even get a block too and some assists in there too.

Sweet has a very solid body. He was a GREAT shot blocker in school, and a highly skilled offensive player. Not just a guy that pushed around smaller players (he did some of that) but a guy that was highly skilled. He had a variety of post moves and his size lets him get great position. He's also got soft hands and GREAT footwork. Some things you cant teach, and Sweetney has those. Combined with a terrific work ethic and attitude its easy to see why people are high on him. He also plays cool and under control. He's fluid and quick and has a nose for the ball.

Who knows what kind of NBA player he will be. He wont be Tractor Traylor because he's never shown hes commited to getting better (or slimmer). Sweetney has since college when he was a 300 lb freshman. I dont know how long it will take but I picture him a Randolph type player on offense. Probably not 20 points, but 15. Brand like on the boards and almost as good a shot blocker. A 15/12/1.5 type of guy w/ a high fg % and 4 offensive boards a game.

He's NOT Lonny Baxter and Fortson cant tough his moves around the basket.

I put Carlos Boozer.

I like Mike a lot, but I don't think he'll be as good as Brand (especially the shot-blocking at the NBA, not college, level). He's not as quick as Brand. Also, Sweetney's 7'1" wing span is about average for PFs, whereas Brand has an ENORMOUS 7'5" wing span. It's bigger than nearly every PF and even most centers (including Yao Ming). That really helps him block shots.

I put Oakley.

I would have put him as a cross between Randolph and Oak, honestly. I'll think he'll average more than 13 ppg, but not as much as 20, maybe 15-17, and more rebounds than 10 (IMO his offensive rebounding will put him at 12). I know these are Boozer type numbers, but I think he is a totally different player than Boozer. Boozer is thinner ijn the Ben Wallace mold and relies more on quickness, while I think Sweets will rely more on brute force to get the job done.

shot blocking is instincts and position and quickness and length. Sweetney has good length. He was one of the best shot blockers in school. He's got great quickness. He's not as fast as Brand but he could be almost as quick. I remember Chaney saing last summer that MS was one of the quickest 4s he had seen.

I agree and I think Sweetney can be a good shot-blocker, but Brand's HUGE wing span is an asset for shot-blocking that Sweetney doesn't have. You're right that instincts and positioning are very important, but having arms longer than Yao Ming (like Brand does) and most centers is also very helpful.

i agree 100%...i only put Boozer because i think he can average similar type numbers...but like you said, they are different types of players, but i do feel Sweetney is deceptively quick for his size, as has been pointed out earlier.

I still see him as the next Elton Brand, but I will not be disappointed if he can't average 20-10-2

right..

I don't think he'll ever be as good as Brand on offense but I think he'll be a much better rounder. Sweetney was simply born to attack the glass

It's one thing for him to use all his energy in brief moments off the bench like last year. It's another thing to keep it up for a full game. I see Sweetney being a good rebounder, but I'm not expecting him (much less saying that it's "a given") to average 12 rbs a game--that's more than guys like Shaq and Ben Wallace!
