David Fizdale has created a point-guard monster.
Mario Hezonja, in his second straight start at the point, carried the Knicks on his back to a furious fourth-quarter rally, posting a new career-high of 30 points to upend the Wizards, 113-110, at a Garden that rocked until the final surreal seconds.
Coming off a triple-double in a blowout loss to the Rockets in his debut as a point guard Friday, Hezonja was a hero Sunday night, scoring 13 fourth-quarter points, and perhaps throwing into question what position he’s best suited for at age 24.
Hezonja, the former 2015 high lottery pick who had set his career scoring high of 29 in Orlando last week, racked up 30 points with a huge go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minute and two game-clinching free throws with eight seconds left. He also had five

assists and six rebounds.
With two games left, Knicks coach David Fizdale sounds like he’s giving the Croatian the ball the rest of the way. And Hezonja wants it.
“Sure, we’re not going to stop now,’’ Fizdale said. “He’s played three great games. Great games. Let’s keep looking at him and see where it takes him and if this is something that is really where he should be in the future.”
The question is what the future will be for Hezonja, a free agent presumed to be headed out of New York. He’s had some marquee showings of late, including his last-second, game-winning block on LeBron James three weeks ago.
“I’m ready to talk to [James] Dolan,’’ Hezonja quipped. “If he gives me that call on July 1, we’re done.’’

After the Wizards reclaimed the lead, Hezonja drained a 3-pointer from the left wing to give the Knicks a 111-110 edge with 44 seconds left after which he pointed at defender Jeff Green, a former teammate. Hezonja said his buddy was talking trash.
With 18 seconds left, Sam Dekker ended it for Washington by fumbling an easy inbounds pass out of bounds.
“I said, back home, that was my natural position,’’ Hezonja said. “And me as a player, I like to involve my teammates in action. So it feels good and I’m grateful that Fiz and [assistant Keith] Smart put me in that spot.’’
The Wizards (32-49) had won nine straight at the Garden before folding Sunday. The Knicks moved to 16-64 and can avoid setting the all-time worst record in franchise history by going 1-1 in their final two games.

Derek Fisher’s 2014-15 squad holds the record for the franchise’s worst record at 17-65. The Knicks visit the Bulls on Tuesday and host the Pistons on Wednesday.

“With all the struggles and losses, our fans came out every night really supporting us,’’ Fizdale said. “Yes I think about games when we put it together how this place is going to be.”
It looked like the Knicks would collapse again when Mitchell Robinson was called for goaltending on Troy Brown, who then nailed a corner 3 on the next possession to give the Wizards a two-point lead with 48 seconds to go.
Hezonja got in a groove early, penetrating and passing. In the first half, he had perfect alley-oop passes to the Knicks’ two rookies, Robinson and Kevin Knox. Robinson finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks.
Point guard Dennis Smith Jr., after missing the previous three games with a bad back, came off the bench to play 26 minutes and score 15 points, sparking the fourth-quarter run. Playing off the ball some when Hezonja was on the court, Smith admitted he was less than 100 percent but wants to finish the season on the court.
“He probably won’t say it,’’ Fizdale said. “He was playing through a lot of pain. He really came through down the stretch.’’
