This would be a good signing. I saw Bateer play when he was with Denver. He made our frontcourt look pathetic and that was in the Layden era. This guy can bang inside and score in the post, I don't know why he didn't stay with one team in the NBA.
Knicks are happening and have a Unicorn.

It was Mengke, age 8, who'd been looking alarmingly adult-like since he showed up to Grade 1 standing 6 feet tall.

I'm already a little scared of this guy.

"We've already said if he attacks anyone on the (opposing) team we're sorry, we can't pull him off," said Jerome Williams, the Raptor forward.

Added O'Neill: "I like how physical he is. He banged into (Raptors forward) Lamond (Murray) one time today and it was like, `Oh, my goodness.'"

I hope he makes it on to the team!

>hes way better than Dudley IMO

Okay, he's a rocking Mongolian Dudley with all the good looks of Herb Williams!

I'm starting to really like the Knicks bench. Remember back, I guess in JvG's first and second year, when then bench was boss? Herb! Buck! Brunson! Now: Bateer!

I can't wait to hear "And at center, from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Menk-ghhhheeeee BA-TEEEER!" Maybe on fan appreciation day, everyone will get a tiny model yurt.

I smell "marketing" here. i wonder how much the knicks could earn from Bateer's NY Knick jersey sales in China and elsewhere... i mean he's been the starting C for Chinese national team for the past 8 yrs (i think). If he can play half-decent, income from jersey sales, TV rights, and incresed ticket sales, etc, would mean a lot to Layden.

Layden?

My bad! I meant Dolan...

Great article. If he could put fear in the eyes of our opponents with his physical play, I'd be happy with that. We need some toughness!

It just occured to me that an upside of the Bateer signing is that Matt Taibbi--New York's finest gonzo political sports, or is it sports politics, reporter--is going to be all over the Knicks and Bateer this year. Oddly enough, Taibbi has interviewed Banzragh Odonjil, the president of the Mongolian Basketball Association, written several other articles about Mongolian basketball. (See, for example, http://www.times.spb.ru/archive/times/207-208/round.html) He also claims to have actually played professional basketball in Inner Mongolia.

I'm not going to be surprised when Taibbi pledges one bong hit for each Bateer rebound and then keeps score in the New York Press.

Knicks prepare offer for 6-11 Mongolian

Wednesday, September 22, 2004

The Knicks already have 15 guaranteed contracts, but since their center position is occupied by household names such as Nazr Mohammed and Bruno Sundov, they are still going to make a one-year, $700,000 commitment to Mongolian giant Mengke Bateer.

The three-year veteran is expected to sign a contract tomorrow, according to agent Xia Song, who told the China Daily newspaper that his client was contacted by the Knicks before the Athens Olympics.

Which means that Isiah Thomas' overspending, at least for now, will continue unabated. Barring a trade, the Knicks will go into camp with an unprecedented 16 guaranteed contracts (including the long-departed John Amaechi) after picking up Jamison Brewer and Bruno Sundov since the Jamal Crawford deal.

At 6-11, 310 pounds, Bateer is not exactly the Shaq-stopper the Knicks are looking for, but he is an extraordinary specimen, with an extraordinary story. He was expected to follow in his father's footsteps as a shepherd in the northern Chinese province of Inner Mongolia, but he had a major growth spurt, shooting up to six feet tall by the first grade.

What?? The Knicks are one of many teams with more than 15 guaranteed contracts and it's hardly shocking to start training camp with three players making the league minimum, knowing that you may have to cut one of them

Honestly I don't know where Dave D gets his info. Each individual contract can be guarenteed or not...its up to the negotiations between the player and team. Since the NY Knicks don't report the terms of the contract Dave must have some inside info (which is likely)....or is just speculating.

as long as he's not getting it from the tap, he can drink whatever the hell he wants.

actually seems like a good fit.

Anyone think Moochie and Shandon are on this team when the regular season starts?

"Looks good passing the ball and setting screens... Has three-point range... Not as talented as Wang Zhizhi or Yao Ming"

I'm hoping he uses more of a post game if he sticks with us. That is until we face Miami, then he can shoot that 3 all day.

if he can operate close to how Doleac was used in the 1st half of last year, i would be ecstatic...set picks, play some D down low, bang in the paint, & hit some open jumpers from time to time...that's probably overly optimistic, but i haven't seen much of his game at all so i have no idea what to expect.

if nothing else, he can fast become a fan favorite at the Garden a-la Herb if he at least hustles & gives a good effort whenever he's on the floor.
