My friend told me that knicks signed bateer to a one year deal. lol i know this source ain that reliable but on some chinese website, they reported that the deal was already done. I wouldnt be totally against this signing just because hes pretty big and wide. I heard he grew up in mongolia and drank sheep and horse milk, and that makes u strong and tough.

Do you mean Shane Battier, from Memphis? I believe he's still under contract.

There's nothing confusing; the Knicks obviously may or may not have signed some player who drinks horse milk

He may have had too much of the horse too...

Just kidding but now seriously, wow! He is 6'11" and 310?! Is there any truth on this signing, any news?

You mean Mengke Bateer, the thirty-one year old Inner Mongolian center. 8 points in seven games with Toronto last year, 9 points in games in San Antonio the year before, and 139 points with Denver in his rookie year. Apparently no injuries in the NBA but he missed games for "personal reasons."

Looks like Herb Williams. Really.

I, for one, welcome our new Inner Mongolia center.

i have to agree... just another stiff (a bit of international flavor though... if that counts for something). even against mediocre opposition here in asia mengke bateer never was a dominant force (obviously overshadowed by the likes of yao ming and wang zhizhi).

he is HUGE though. compared to, let's say, jake tsakalidis... i'd take tsakalidis ANY day. plus, he's slow and getting old at 31.

Bateer to join Knicks, agent says
(www.chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2004-09-21 17:36

Menk Bateer, former†San Antonio Spurs center and†member of†NBA Champions team,†has finally†found†its way to†stay in†NBA,†Oriental Sports quoted†agent Xia Song as saying.

"We have accepted†a contract offered†by the Knicks, and†the contract†is very likely to be signed", said Xia Song,†who also†revealed†they have booked tickets to New York on September 22.

According to Xia, the one-year contract, worth of US$700,000, would finally be signed after Bateer receiving a physical exmination required by the Knicks late this month in New York.

It was reported the Knicks had begun†contacting Bateer as early as before the Athens Olympic Games and coach Lenny Wilkens quite admitted†Bateer's presence†in Chinese tional team in Athens.

China ranked 8th†at the event of men's Basketball†in the summer's Athens Olympic Games, but Bateer barely†given any†chance to play due to a waist injury.†

"We have†received the offer from the Knicks about a week ago, and†Wilkens should have played a key role in this", Xia Song said.

"The Knicks hope Bateer would be adapted to the their rhythms as soon as possible, and we hope Bateer could be given more time to play".

Bateer said he would treasure the chance of playing for the Knicks and would work harder†for the New York side. And he†just did what he said, going towards a Beijing stadium†shortly after booking tickets to New York.

It's a one year contract? I guess that means we have 16 players w/guaranteed contracts. Either a trade is on the way or someone is going to get waived/bought out

What intrigues me is that we are seriously overloading our front court....Nazr, then Baker than Sundov, now Bateer. Baker was supposed to get time at C now with 4 centers, it isn't smart to sit 2 on the IR or taking up a spot on the bench, so now Baker may get most of his time at PF, which means Sweets, KT, JYD, and Baker are all going to jockey for time there...that is 4 players who each deserve some playing time...there has to be a trade....

I wouldn't worry about the playing time. I assume that unless Bateer or Sundov are huge surprises, one will be on the IR and the other will get DNPs/be used sparingly (like collecting fouls on Shaq).

I understand that...I can see Sundov on the IR, and Bateer getting minutes only vs Miami, but it makes no sense when you already have 14 player under contract. We are like Dallas Mavedricks East....There has to be some type of movement on the wasy...maybe they plan on buyouts instead of trades? Bye-Bye Shandon and Moochie...

I smell "marketing" here. i wonder how much the knicks could earn from Bateer's NY Knick jersey sales in China and elsewhere... i mean he's been the starting C for Chinese national team for the past 8 yrs (i think). If he can play half-decent, income from jersey sales, TV rights, and incresed ticket sales, etc, would mean a lot to Layden.

I think Yao Ming starts for the Chinese national team in all international competitions actually.
