There were logical reasons to forgo an early contract extension for Porzingis, namely because it saved the Knicks about $10 million in cap space to chase Kevin Durant. But as team president Steve Mills backs off his declaration that he will attract another superstar in 2019 — and as the team surrenders a sixth consecutive season to the draft lottery — it’s worth noting that Porzingis has stated priorities that run counter to the current Knicks’ reality.

At this point, the question isn’t just whether the Knicks should offer Porzingis a max contract but also whether he should sign one. Because the word on Porzingis is that he loves New York but is skeptical about the Knicks. And who wouldn’t be?

NY media just making some noise. If NY tries to short-change him at all, he will just sign a contract for the max with another team that the Knicks will match. I think he returns either way for the full max (no injury exceptions.)

Not sure about that. Meaning I know NYK is offering the MAX...but will he sign a 5 year when he could go 3+1(Player Opt). Yes we have him for 3 years but look at AD in the middle of a contract and they are talking about him moving even though his deal is not up for another two years.

Coming off a serious knee injury, it would make sense for him to sign a 5 year max rather than 3+ 1 player option.

Maybe, but he is still so young. I would think he would want to max his earnings now, and dictate his future in his late 20s.

If he wants to be a Knick, he will get the money. If he doesn't want to be a Knick, there's nothing to be concerned about.

If KP is actually watching the games (and not reading the garbage conjectures of newspaper people), he has to think that returning to this squad means playoffs.

How many games would we have won with KP? We’d be 500 easy.

This team has played hard and there is talent.

Adding KP and the top pick we will add next year means we are back in the playoffs, regularly for the next 5-10 years.

Our next challenge is advancing.

Agreed...but even with all the hugs and kisses...I would not put it pass for KP brother to play hardball particularly if he could force his way to a Boston or some other ready made destination

but really, what player on a rookie contract who was going to get that max has done that? NONE.

I don't think KP would cost himself his big deal here... since when did Brooklyn become the SAS? Because if you read the article the argument is that Brooklyn would be more attractive to KP than the Knicks. Yeah right.

Big injuries like KP had are not adding confidence.
KP knows better that anyone that with his body build he is vulnerable.
He and his family are looking smart to me so they will try to get the best possible deal from Knicks.
And they will get it.
Another question if Knicks will benefit from this over time.
But there is no better path of taking the risk and there is never a path without risk.
This is all talk about nothing. Nothing that should be on our mind. This does not have multiple outcomes.

If the Knicks can sign him to a more team-friendly contract, they should.

Porzingis has leverage too, though. He could sign an offer sheet with another team, which projects to carry a max of $117 million over four years. He could even sign his qualifying offer, which will be worth just $4,485,665 for one season but would allow him to become an unrestricted free agent in 2020.

The Knicks – with the ability to offer a max deal that projects to be worth $158 million over five years – have room to negotiate. They could guarantee him more than any other team could while still not guaranteeing his full max. They can also match any offer sheet.

But they could also push too hard and further alienate Porzingis.

It’s a fine line, one New York might be prepared to walk.

The article is based on Bondy's article and quotes it. I don't think this is going anywhere.

The Knicks should trade him to Boston for Tatum.

Zinger has the more rare/coveted skill set, but also the larger injury risk. Boston has questions up the middle for the future.

Is there any reason for concern.
