File under the 'way too early' dept, but am thinking about Fizdale's methods and whether they hold up when KP returns. Specifically, the role that real accountability is playing with this team. No one is immune from the second unit or even a spot on the pine. We've seen it with Kanter, Dot, Frank, Burke, etc. It's refreshing to see both an up-front declaration of accountability and then the real follow-thru. And it is showing results - players are responding/learning from their benchings and pine time.
But will this last when KP returns?
I think it will. First, Fiz is on record saying he talked to KP about how he operates and "how I’m going to hold guys accountable to a strict level" - that to me means 'no divas'. And yesterday Fiz re-emphasized the power he's been given by Perry and Mills:
“That’s just how I think you should coach. I just think a lot of times as a coach in this league it’s hard sometimes because you don’t have the power to do it. I’ve been empowered by (team president) Steve Mills and (GM) Scott Perry to coach this team and to hold them to a higher standard. It gives me a lot of freedom to do these type of things. As a group, it gives me credibility. They know that everyone will be held to a high standard.”
This is Fiz reiterating that his method isn't going to change once KP is back. "Everyone" includes any stars - we saw that with Gasol. Will be interesting to see how KP handles this and if he takes his lead from smart players like Lee or the dumb ones like Melo.
The new new core: Randle, RJ, IQ. Maybe Mitch. Future pick. Future trade. Future FA.
