It's all summary from today's articles, but here it is anyway:
NBA Writers Bloc: Should the Knicks trade Spree?
The New York Daily News and the New York Times finally got around to acknowledging that the Knicks are trying to move Latrell Sprewell.
But they have decidely different takes on what such a move might bring.
The Times' Chris Broussard questions whether there's anything GM Scott Layden can do, including moving Spree and Marcus Camby, to get the Knicks out of the deep salary-cap poo they find themselves in.
"To leave mediocrity, the Knicks will have to package Sprewell and Camby or Sprewell and Thomas for one terrific big man. But with great power forwards in high demand, the chances of obtaining one are slim, even when dangling Sprewell and Camby. That is why the Knicks, one of several teams trying to pry center Marc Jackson away from Golden State, will most likely have to settle for less. And less is what they have now, so why make a move?"
The Daily News' Frank Isola was decidely more upbeat. "There are still some teams that will shy away from Sprewell because of his past transgressions. But for teams that believe they are one dynamic player away from contending for a championship, Sprewell is a proven commodity who plays both ends of the court. Maybe a package of Sprewell and Kurt Thomas or Sprewell and Othella Harrington could translate into a young power forward or center. The idea for the Knicks is to get younger and begin rehabilitating their salary cap."
The Daily News' Mitch Lawrence has an even better suggestion. Keep Spree and Camby, continue to lose and try to recreate some Patrick Ewing NBA draft lottery magic.
"So why can't David Stern deliver the goods again? It's going on 17 years, Mr. Commish. What have you done for your hometown team lately? If the Knicks lose with a purpose -- it shouldn't be terribly difficult, given the rest of their schedule -- they could benefit by coming away with [Duke's] Jason Williams. . . In this case, losing cures all."
