Hey guys,
I have just been listening into the introductory press conference from Derrick Williams (once a Knick always a Knick! ;-) at FC Bayern Munich Basketball here in Germany.
He is joining the team this season playing in the German League (which is okayish) and the Euroleague (which is the second best league after the NBA).
One Point that came up was how it basically "came" to him being a second pick in the draft now playing overseas and not in the NBA anymore.
He was also asked about his experience playing with LeBron in Cleveland.

He brought up a really good point in pointing out, that when he joined the league at 19, 20 yrs old he lacked in guidence and veteran leadership to understand what you got o sacrifice and the work you have to put in.

Now looking at the Knicks this season in that perspective we obviously have a lot of young talent in KP, Knox, Mitch Rob, Trier, Mudiay, Dot and Hezonja you just NEED to have the "right" kind of veteran leadership on the squad as well.
I really like how Fiz and the organization have brought in Pat and Clyde to talk to the young guns but you also need this everyday leadership.
I see that guys like Lance and Lee can provide that but there is not much depth in that department I think.
Enes Kanter, THJ or Burke are not gonna provide this I think.

What do you guys think... do we have enough Leadership on the team?

Williams is right and usually says all the right things but does not follow thru.
Leadership can come from young guys too. Melo was not a leader but had a strong work ethic and a HOF career by example. Lance is paid to be a leader. I see KP work hard and by example lead but short sample in the post Melo era is not defined. Kanter is 26 and does bring some qualities to the team.
We don’t see real leadership as its in the lockerroom and practice.
Williams is not a bad guy but go back and read his quotes before each season with new teams. He was drafted 2nd and not in the NBA. It’s a tough pill to swallow. I hope he saved some money.

I don't think the front OFFICE truly understands the impact of veteran leadership despite the 100's of young players saying exactly what DWILL is saying.

The knicks are in a tough spot because they have quite a few young players and they really want to see this guys grow or see what they really have, before they bring in some veteran who's going to want to win now, or consume more min. Young players succeed and develop much quicker when they are around other really good players who have had success.

I like that Fiz brought in Walt frazier and Ewing to sit down a talk to certain players, he gets major cool point for that. sht, I would hire walt to strictly work with frank and Mudiay.

Im not really worried about Williams' future... theres some reasons why he is not in the NBA anymore and in the 7 yrs he was there did not reach his full potential.
He will be doing fine playing as a pro somewhere in Europe/Asia and earn some nice money into his mid early 30s or so...
He should be fine.

Just thought that it was a good example on how team internal (or coaching staff) leadership is so extremely important to set a standard in terms of workethic, all the little important details of the game and also NBA lifestyle.
You need this especially in a young group.
And I do see us a little slim in that area outside of Lee and Lance...
Kanter is a great guy in terms of character and fun and all but does not come be as a savy veteran.
Its true of course that you dont really "see" the leadership as its as you mentioned primarily in the lockerroom and practice but you can more often than not tell looking at the personalities of these guys!
