Nets waive G Lucious Harris

September 15, 2004
EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) - Lucious Harris' seven-year tenure with the New Jersey Nets is over.

On Wednesday, the Nets requested waivers on the 33-year-old Harris, who has played in 54 playoff games with the team - tied for the most in franchise history.

Harris averaged 7.3 points and 2.5 rebounds in the playoffs for the Nets, who were Eastern Conference champions in both the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons.

During the 2002-03 regular season, Harris averaged a career-high 10.3 points in 77 games, including 25 starts.

Though his production fell to 6.9 points in 69 games last season, the Nets topped the Atlantic Division with a 47-35 record before being defeated by the eventual NBA champion Detroit Pistons in the conference semifinals.

"Lucious was a valuable member of our organization for the past seven seasons," Nets CEO Rod Thorn said. "He was an integral part of our accomplishments over the past three years, and we wish him nothing but success in the future."

Originally a second-round pick of the Dallas Mavericks in 1993, Harris has averaged 7.5 points, 1.5 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 727 career games with the Mavericks, 76ers and Nets.

Harris is the latest veteran to be sent packing this offseason by Nets, who traded forward Kenyon Martin to the Denver Nuggets and guard Kerry Kittles to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Rumors have also been circulating about a trade of star guard Jason Kidd to the Portland Trail Blazers.

I guess the Nets are really going for youth and rebuilding. Kidd is next I presume.

This is getting really sad. Has a good team ever been dismantled this quickly before? 98 Bulls, maybe...but I can't think of any others.

Sounds like Kidd will be gone VERY soon.

Yowza.

By the time the Nets come to Brooklyn theyre going to be a bottom dweller again. If theyre going to get rid of all there good players they might as well stay in the swamp.

They are getting rid of a solid 10 ppg off the bench player who has experience and leadership qualities. I don't see how this would hurt the team that much financially. It's not like he's some overpaid maxed out guy or something. Ratner < The Dolans, at least in some aspects...

Well if they are coming to Brooklyn then the team looks to be more attractive since Kidd and Kenyon won't be there.....

I'm from Brooklyn and if they kept the Nets intact I would have hated my hometown team. Now there is no telling what they will look like.
I just wish they didn't sign Jefferon long term I think that was dumb.

My only regreet about the Nets blowing up is that it wuold have been a great rivalry this year. Wouldn't you have loved the revenge games with our new lineup against KMart et al? It would have been sweet to kick that team's ass!
