If you don't love him, then why in God's name would you want to pay him 8-10 million?
Think about what you are saying. You want the Knicks to find a young player with upside, who costs them nothing in trade, signs for a team friendly deal ( in your world, 8-10 must be team friendly...) as a street free agent , then trade him at the deadline for a king's ransom.
If a player is available, generally HE IS AVAILABLE FOR A REASON. The same reason every team could have him and doesn't want him (the Knicks won't be first on anyone's list without an overpay) is the same reason they won't want him in a trade later.
In MLB you can mine free agency for fringe relievers, watch some get good production, and then trade them to contenders at the deadline. That's a functional and reliable way to churn low level free agents. The NBA doesn't even come close to working that way.
