According to espn.com, Jerry West has avoided giving Pau Gasol a contract extension because he can't decide if Gasol is worth a max contract. If you were West, would you give him a max contract?

I would. And not just because of his star shining right now from the Olympics. Think of how many 7-footers there are right now who give you what he does.

Yea, Jerry West should really keep this guy. The problem is and I bet this is what West is thinking, Pau Gasol is not a "Franchise". He is the Low Post option everyone would LOVE to have and I love his game. But, IMO, he cannot take over games like Shaq, Duncan, Kobe, McGrady, KG, soon to be Franchises: Lebron, Carmello, Pierce at time and others in the past.

With that said, HE DESERVES A MAX CONTRACT.

This is plain silly.
This is the analysis statistically:
So his rookie year, he scores 18 ppg, grabs 9 boards, swats 2 shots per in 37 mpg.
His second year, he scores 19 ppg, grabs 9 boards, swats a bit less (1.8 bpg) in 36 mpg
Last year, he scores 18 ppg, grabs 8 boards, and swats a bit less (1.69 bpg) IN JUST 31.5 MPG!

The grizzlies are TEAM oriented now and if they decide to expect 18/8/2 from someone in 32 mpg, then that's what they're getting!
I could easily imagine Pau stat hogging Ricky Davis style and dropping 25/12 on a bad team. He's worth the max. However, he needs to shed that soft image before he turns into a bonafide superstar though.

I think he's worth the max too. I knew his stats were slightly lower last year, but I didn't realize his minutes had been reduced that much. If I had Pau on my team, I'd certainly find a way to play him more than 31 mpg! I also think he could easily be a 20/10 player on a bad team (maybe even 22/11)

Yes.

Where is West going to get a more talented 7-footer?

Comparing Houston to Pau is insulting. Houston was a big mistake and his contract was an even bigger mistake. Pau can score in the Paint. No, Pau does score in the paint, a lot. Pau really deserves a max contract. He would be the Marbury, Pierce and Kidd type second option.

near max, but not max. in the grizz's team game, pau is not max contract valued. many can come and step in and give you what pau gives you. on another team though, pau is max

I would give him a max contract, but then again, I'm an NY fan and my judgement may be impared from the huge contracts I've seen given to the undeserving.

I think they need to give him the role of a max player if they want to succeed in the playoffs.

of the 30 or so max contract players in the league 1 out of 3 max contract player makes it to the finals. The recent signing of kmart could pave the way for players with similar stats such as gasol to max contracts. nevertheless, west should go with instincts in such a signing

put it this way, i would trade any knick for pau in a nano-second. He is super star that has not been exploited enough by his own team. He is an unusual talent-extremely under-rated. He could play either C or PF--i would prefer him at PF with a more physical counter part next to him. If he received 40 minutes and was the vocal part of the team he would average 26 pts 12-13 reb 2.5 blocks shooting 50%. Its kind of peculiar that someone thinks brian cardinal is worth 7 mm a year but pau is not worth 13-14---bottom line is some team will do what the nuggets did-give him 20+mm extra up front to put the$ pressure on the grizzlies if they dont get it done this year.

Gasol is worth the max contract. He is a 7 footer with all round basketball skills. He will get it one way or the other. Jerry West is not going to let him go away like Cuban with Nowitzki. It is an european thing.

if pau stats are to be used in any meaningful way to justify his max award then surely there must be a nba yearly award for which mr gasol is a standout. and how does pau match up with another euro,ak 47. stats http://www.nationwide.net/~patricia/ courtesy pat bender
all interview team: no pau; ak47, 1 vote. mvp: no pau; ak47, 2 points. all defensive: ak47 second team; no pau. all nba team: pau 8 points; ak47, 48 points. most improved player: pau 1 point; ak47 101 points. btw, brian cardinal collected 18 points. defensive player of the year: no pau; ak47 67 points. player of the month: no pau. player of the week: no pau; ak47 twice. looks like pau has accomplished a lot for a max player signing….and by your standards he’s a superstar? wow

the guy is a superstar. kirilenko is also great and he will also get a max contract. who cares if they are euro asian south american , euros are just as good as USA players, there is just more quality depth here--but that is also just a matter of time. If they ran more plays for him and he went 38-40 minutes--they guy is going to be 25+ points and 12+ rebounds a night end of story. I would take pau over 98% of NBA players--he is WAY up there in terms of talent.

heck look what happened when he got hurt at the end of the season--they lost many of their last games and got swept in the playoffs. hes an unstoppable effecient 7 foot player who is also disruptive on the D[and he hasnt even come close to his full potential]
