From realgm wiretap

Elimination of Second Round of Draft will be Discussed in New CBA

With the emergence of second-round drafted players like Carlos Boozer and Gilbert Arenas, two players who acheived sudden success and subsequently left their club because of loopholes, this issue will be part of collective bargaining negotiations.

One possibility that is being considered is an elimination of the second round altogether, which will mean that those players who would have been drafted by a specific team, will be free to try to make a team of their choosing.

It would be nice if we can roster a minor league team of players and blow millions to build ours up to be the best. Big market teams can afford to do so.

eliminating the 2nd round would greatly benefit a team like the Knicks that a) can afford to pay for a mistake and b) have a solid talent evaluator for GM.
a two year deal w/ a team option 3rd for something like 900k may not seem like much, but its one many teams cant afford.

Also, we could have just signed Anderson Varejão and Peter Ramos w/ the MLE and passed on Vin. The Knicks can afford to just throw a 3 year $2mm contract at guys like that... most other teams cant.

It will be very interesting because if your a good prospect its a HUGE advantage to not get drafted past the lottery and skip the first round.

Still have to have roster spots open each year to hold these kids.

Its an interesting concept. It allows players to move to where they can have a better chance. But the money still must be less than the last pick in the first round!

The other thing can happen is guaranteed money in the second round. it would prevent any bidding up of players. Way I see it, if a team does not want to draft, the pick can be trade or sold to teams in need or desire such picks.
