New York trades:
C Kurt Thomas (11.1 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 1.9 apg in 31.9 minutes)
SG Anfernee Hardaway (9.2 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.3 apg in 27.6 minutes)

New York receives:
SG Ruben Patterson (7.0 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.9 apg in 22.6 minutes)
PF Shareef Abdur-Rahim (16.3 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 2.0 apg in 31.6 minutes)

Change in team outlook: +3.0 ppg, -0.9 rpg, and -0.3 apg.

Portland trades:
SG Ruben Patterson (7.0 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.9 apg in 22.6 minutes)
PF Shareef Abdur-Rahim (16.3 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 2.0 apg in 31.6 minutes)

Portland receives:
C Kurt Thomas (11.1 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 1.9 apg in 80 games)
SG Anfernee Hardaway (9.2 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.3 apg in 76 games)
Change in team outlook: -3.0 ppg, +0.9 rpg, and +0.3 apg.

TRADE ACCEPTED

Due to New York and Portland being over the cap, the 15% trade rule is invoked. New York and Portland had to be no more than 115% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Can't see Portland doing this. This would mean they turned Sheed into KT, lost Patterson and saddled themselves with Penny's contract as well. Makes more sense to me that they're either going to move Randloph and make Reef their starting 4, or move Reef for a better deal than this.

Exactly; they can get a much better deal than this. The only reason I'd want Shareef anyway would be to trade his expiring contract.

What you two are forgetting is that Sheed doesn't want to play in Portland so any trade is possible from that stand point, Portland or any team for that matter doesn't want a player that doesn't want them.
Look at the Shaq trade or even McGrady's if a player wants out that team can't necessarily be very picky in who they may want or get in any trade.
Let's say Sheed doesn't go to camp, the longer he is out the more hamstrung Portland is to make a trade, they will have to do something at that time.

My point would be that Portland did a very good job recouping value for Sheed - they lucked out because Atlanta was in a salary dump mode. But to turn Sheed now into KT PLUS lose Patterson PLUS get saddled with Penny is a huge downturn, negating the excellent deal they had maneuvered in trading a star who hadn't wanted to return to them.

The Magic got pretty good players for MacGrady. Shareef's huge expiring contract will be appealing to many teams. They'll have no trouble trading him even if he doesn't want to play in Portland. (BTW, I'm assuming you meant "Shareef" and not "Sheed" when you said "Sheed doesn't want to play in Portland" since Rasheed does not play in Portland.)

They're not gonna give us superior players plus $30 mil in expiring contracts even if we include Sweetney and Ariza in the deal

Anyway, Portland isn't likely to deal Shareef any time soon. First they gotta figure out the whole Randolph situation. Rahim only wanted out due to PT, but if Portland trades Zach, he's gonna wanna stay.
Besides what's the worst case scenario for them? He refuses to play? So they can either let him sit the season and cut about 14 mil off their books (atleast I think it's 14 mil, feel free to correct me), or they can trade him for a better player than the Knicks are offering.

The Blazers are basically telling Shareef that they will not trade him at this time (since they are trying to figure out what to do with Zach, etc). So if Rahim really wants to get traded his best shot of that happening is to suck it up and play well with the minutes he gets so that a trade can be made later on. Holding out would only hurt him...

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Shareef will most likely be heading to NY....

"Abdur-Rahim odd man out

If you have the salary-cap space, there is a high-scoring just-in-his-prime power forward available. When the Portland Trail Blazers signed Darius Miles last week to a six-year, $48 million deal, it meant the end of Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who was once considered a potential star.

The Blazers are going to build around Zach Randolph, and the last thing they want is an unhappy power forward behind him. Abdur-Rahim has only one year left on his contract, but it's for $14.6 million.

It sure sounds like he's headed for the New York Knicks, who are desperate to put together a team that can contend immediately."

The NY part is just speculation. Most likely he goes to a team looking for cap room.

I agree that we have no shot at Rahim, I just posted this because I thought it was interesting that they said we are desparate to put together a contender immediately.
