I hope it works out for him, but I'll be skeptical until I see him playing again

Williams eyes return to NBA

By LUCIANA CHAVEZ, Staff Writer

CHAPEL HILL -- Former Duke Blue Devil and Chicago Bull Jay Williams said Saturday that he is 85 percent recovered from the 2003 motorcycle accident that put a brutal stop to a promising NBA career.
It's a temporary stop.

"I have about 15 [percent] more to go, but I think sometime by midseason of next year I might be ready to go," Williams said after the World's Greatest All-Star Game at the Smith Center on Saturday. "I might be out here playing this [charity] game next year."

The former college player of the year said he would love to be ready to go by that time but doesn't have a firm time frame in his head. He is cautious about rushing himself.

Williams, who won a national title at Duke in 2001, has been working out and playing basketball. He was waived by the Bulls in February. Williams could have played on Saturday against the North Carolina all-stars but chose not to because of the risk. Asked what has kept him going through a difficult rehabilitation, Williams said being near Tobacco Road.

"Just not being surrounded by friends and a lot of things like that," he said. "That can get distracting and down here I can stay focused."

Good news, but the last 15% may or may not ever come back.

If he is 85% recovered, he should be able to play right now. When any injury is 85% recovered, the difference in your play usually is not even noticeable to anyone. I wonder if he was exaggerating when he said he had 15% more healing to go.

yeah, but we're talking about a guy that had his body broken in pieces. not a common "sport injury".

He's an FA, right? The Knicks' first priority should be getting one more center like Keon, but would you also try to free up a roster spot to get Jay Williams?

We just signed Jamison Brewer.

I want Williams to succeed very much. He needs to make a team, and a year to get his timing back.

We just can't sign everyone.

The BobCats should grab him and rehab him. He is a North Carolina story and even devout Tarheels will hope he does well and can support him.

If Jay Williams looks healthy by the middle of the season, I'd have no problem waiving Brewer and signing Williams (unless Brewer looks great). Many players signed to the league min get waived when better players become available.

ditto. we have to take chances and gambles, when we don't have to make big comitment (ouch spelling) like for dice.

I have heard Jay is commited to the Bulls and will give them first, second and third chance to resign him for peanuts if/when he comes back.

That crash violated his NBA contract but rather than voiding his deal they opted to buy him out for something like $2.8mm... thats basicly out of the kindness of their hearts and shows real class as an organization.

He's said this publicly.

yes, kudos to bulls for doing that! ITs a lot of money to give someone, and I hope he can make it bac with the bulls first.

I don't know how he and crawford get along, but I am sure they are sick of each other by now.

Unfortunatly if Williams makes it back, it could cost Duhan his job. weird.

yep, fish is right, Jay did say that he would give the Bulls first chance if he ever made a comeback...i think he would at the very least allow them to sign him & then trade him just so they would get something in return...maybe he would still be worth a protected 1st round pick depending on how good he looked to scouts in his rehab games? who knows...the Bulls probably won't be interested in keeping him when they have Hinrich, Gordon & Frank on their roster now, but i'm sure they could trade use him as a trade chip if Jay would be open to that.

Lets talk about sock height next.

Or width of sweatbands and whom looks coolest with them.

Then don't reply. This thread generated enough replies that obviously no one agrees with you about the topic not being worth discussing

Yes that was a classy move by the Bulls. This whole thing reminds me of the Bobby Hurley situation, unfortunately he was never able to get back to 100%.I did see an interview with him and he is making a good living in the horse racing biz but he also wants to return to hoops as a coach. With his father being one of the best and his tutelage under coach K,he has a good shot.If JWill's comeback hits a snag,I hope he gets some inspiration from Hurley.

Yeah, I agree. I forgot about that situation. If I were him, I'd give the Bulls the first chance to sign me too

I guess this is why no one posts in the NBA forum anymore...

LOL
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

All I said was it was a slow day, and that I hate the freaking Celts.

And I don't care about their problems or not. I contributed to the post, and you took ofense.

What are you talking about? Your response seems 100% unrelated to anything you quoted from me. All I mentioned was that I forgot the Bulls were generous to Jay Williams and you started talking about problems the Celtics are having and then about me taking offense to your posts. Sorry, but I have no clue what you're talking about

Well, it really was quite kind of them to give him free money like that. He already betrayed his employers once. After this kind gesture (I reckon it was a PR thing?), I think he should feel obligated to give them first shot based on his conscience.

It's nice to hear that he's got "85%" of his ability back--- he should be grateful that he can live his super-normal life with his $3 mil or so in the bank.

no need to get so hostile man. he was in a life & death situation and he's making his way back. forget money, the motorcycle, and all that crap, we should be rooting for him as a person, not hate on him b/c of his $3 mil.
