Hmmm...

https://sports.yahoo.com/nba-trade-rumors-carmelo-anthony-210209569.html

Carmelo Anthony is now a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder, but save for a refusal from the Cleveland Cavaliers he could have been playing with LeBron James this season.

According to Cleveland.com, the New York Knicks apparently tried to complete a trade with the Cavaliers before settling with the Thunder.

The centerpiece of the potential trade with Cleveland would have been power forward Tristan Thompson, a favorite of LeBron. The Cavaliers apparently decided against making that trade, which is how we wound up with Anthony heading to play with Russell Westbrook and Paul George.

Via Cleveland.com:

The Knicks wanted Thompson, 26, a center who like James is represented by Rich Paul. The Cavs told them no. Thompson is under contract for three more seasons, beginning at $16.4 million this year. Cleveland was willing to do a deal that would’ve cleared some contracts off the books, such as sending Iman Shumpert ($11 million this year) and others.

New York also asked about one of Cleveland’s two first-round choices for 2018, and the Cavs weren’t about to part with either.
The Cavs view the Brooklyn pick they own for 2018 as invaluable for multiple reasons. Trading the Knicks their own first-round pick would prevent them from being able to move the Brooklyn pick later this season.
Obviously an important backstory here is how much LeBron likes Thompson, and that they share the same agent. Thompson remains a somewhat underrated part of the Cavaliers overall success during the regular season.

Thompson played much of the year at center for the Cavaliers last year, apparently making it his permanent position. Cleveland’s roster without Thompson but with both Kevin Love and Carmelo would have been an odd mix, forcing Love to likely be the person to play the 5.

It makes sense that the Knicks would want to Thompson, and it also makes sense that the Cavaliers refused.

No, that isn't why we wanted Melo gone.

Classic off-season propaganda. I remember when I used to buy into it as well...

Like when Marcus Camby gained 20 lbs of muscle.

I hope I am wrong, but this was a lateral move in terms of player quality at best even with all these advanced stats of which I am a supporter of. We shall see here but we are very short on talent anyway, so let's be real. Maybe there is some hope sprinkled in this trade with the stats, etc. and with assumed better teamwork as a basis after the opposite for too long. Otherwise this was really about move on and see what transpires post-Melo/PJax, etc.

There's a
picture of Kanter standing on a scale and the digital readout says 235. Is that propaganda too?

Sorry, I don't mean in the sense that he didn't lose weight, but how these stories have had a track record for leading fans into questionable assumptions about changes to the players' performance on the court and positive results for the team.

I'm speaking as one who wants to believe in this, but also just being careful about holding too much weight into its impact when the bottom line is you need enough top talent in the NBA to win games. Teamwork can be a fine supplement and we have lacked that so that is where I see the hope. Talent wise I struggle to see a clear indication that this trade is going to really improve the team that much if at all this season other than setting the tone for changes to come.

What rule changes?

http://www.nba.com/article/2017/09/15/report-nba-board-governors-vote-draft-lottery-rest-reforms

As two of the NBA’s hot-button issues – “tanking” and “resting,” as they’ve become known in short form – collided head-on late in the 2016-17 season, commissioner Adam Silver sounded as if he’d reached his breaking point.

“It drives me crazy,” Silver said on the eve of the Finals. “There's no doubt about it, there's a certain amount of gamesmanship that's going on with our teams in terms of resting of healthy players at the end of the season.”

In this week’s proposals to the Board of Governors, Silver will be empowered to fine teams that don’t heed those guidelines [resting multiple players from the same game], the ESPN story reported.

It also offered details on the proposed lottery revisions, which would go into effect for the 2019 Draft. They include revised odds that would give the three worst teams the same 14 percent chance of landing the No. 1 pick (currently, 25 percent, 19.9 percent and 15.6 percent).

He got the most value he could for Melo under the circumstances. Trading with Oklahoma, the only way to make salaries work was to get Kanter. While Kanter didn't address our immediate "need" for a PG or a SF, or a defensive player, he was the "best player available" and had a salary large enough to help provide a salary match for Melo.

Don't look at the negative. Look at the positive. Kanter is a beast offensively. He is also a beast under the boards, especially offensive rebounds. His per 36 numbers are off the chart offensively. McDermott is also very good offensively. He has an excellent shot and 3 pt shooters have become more valuable in today's game and should fit in nicely in Hornacek's offensive schemes. I'd rate the players we received a B.

If someone says we should build via the draft....Kanter was a #3 selection in the 2011 draft. McDermott was a #11 selection in the 2014 draft. Beasley was a #2 pick in the 2008 draft. Not all lottery picks, or even top lottery picks, become All-Stars. It is difficult to get ALL-Star plays thru the draft. A team has to get lucky as we did with Porzingis. But we just got 3 lottery picks/players who are very good offensively. Not great 2 way players but they will contribute and add to the Knicks team if Horny utilizes their strengths wisely.

I am very pleased that this trade was done and now we can move on.

This post is excellent. Everything you say about the deal is spot on. People who are disappointed with the haul were not paying attention. No one was giving the knicks equal return for Carmelo especially after Phil depressed Carmelo's trade value. As such the Knicks probably were getting offers of players with bad contracts.

As you so rightfully said Perry handled the situation like pro as he did not panic or cave. Instead he waited Carmelo out until he opened up his list of teams and got a palatable deal.

In Kanter the Knicks got a player with value who they can trade if need be. It is also possible though unlikely Kanter will be gone after the season as he has player option. Conversely Kanter he is a talented player off the bench or even a starter should they decide to keep him.

Mcdermott is also a player who could be a throw in in a deal and his contract is fairly cap friendl, Again just like you said A+ handling of the situation by Perry.

Finally, the other important point no one is talking about: with this trade the Knicks really have a chance to be one of the worse teams in 2018 giving them a legitimate shot at Michael Porter or Luca Doncic in the draft. For that Perry deserves an A+++.

Have to agree with this. Except for the excitement of losing and being a lottery team. Never liked watching a year of losing to play lotto.

My biggest hope is that management is good enough not to F up the KP era. Not very confident as they have F up every other era, including the Melo era.

Hope I am wrong and these young guys meet the expectations.

IDK, mills talked about defense as a priority, and acquired some the worst defenders in the league, not to mention a coaching staff that made RAMBIS the primary defensive coach.

Did you really expect Mills and Perry to check off boxes in the Team needs and wants column by trading Melo? Seriously, considering the extreme circumstances of this trade, we would have been lucky to get warm bodies with short contracts. Instead we got two viable assets (Kanter can be moved next yr and the Bulls pick) and a player in Kanter that can be very productive for us.

melo doesn't pass, or play d, and he takes touches away from willy and kp, that sounds exactly what kanter is.

he doesn't play any sort of defense, doesn't draw doubles, avgs less than 1 assist, and plays the exact same position your 2 promising young bigs play. Is he a assets, perhaps he is.

But we have a history of trading our assets for someone far worse, or cap space, then we take our cap space and overpay the likes of AMARES, NOAHS, MELOS, THJ.

Hopefully THJ turns in to allan Houston 2.0, Kp turns into EWING, and frank turns into starks.

so because the knicks have made some poor trades in the past, it intimates that every trade they make in the present and in the future will also be poor? c'mon man, come with something better than that.

The trade that raped us were the 2011 Melo-Trade !!!
Melo's Gone .. good riddance.
Melo Fans should be happy .. Melo's on a team having the leagues "little Lebron" in Westbrook.
Last season Westbrook took OKC to the postseason games, in the offseason OKC added Paul George to become contenders in the western conference. Now OKC added a scorer in Melo to give Paul George more room n space on offense.

Us Knick Fans are still a mismanagement Knick team having a bogus losing puppet head coach in Hornacek, and another fake star franchise player with poor decision-making and no type of leadership ability standing at 7.3 on the perimeter begging for the ball.

That was awesome. Seems like a great guy. OKC fans and media seem to be upset about his leaving which is a good thing for the Knicks.
