ever since the knicks got starbury last year i have heard one question get asked again and again, can the knicks one day win the champiomship with a team that is built around stephon marbury. In my opinion the answer is yes provided isiah can make significant enough inproovments to the frontcourt. i dont think it is fair when people critisize steph for his lack of playoff success in the past because he has never truly been in a situation where he himself could get his team all that far. In pheonex he had to deal with the spurs that year and he still pushed the spurs to six games. in jersey he never had a team that could legitimetly compete. Now he has his chance in ny, where he always has said is he wanted to be, so this is the time for him to start prooving himself.

My question for everyone is, is Stephon the type of player you can biuld a championship team around?

Is Marbury our best player? Definately, but he is not a franchise player. We are also bringing in other talented players to help support him. We can't rely on him as teams have relied on Shaq, Duncan, or KG.
IMO, Marbs is like our Ben Wallace (sorry, it's been while without using a Detroit analogy). He is a great player, and an all star, but he needs help if this team is going to go anywhere.

i disagree. Franchise players does not have to be center or pf, they can come in all shapes and size. if we werent relying on him who were we relying on? ever since he came here we have been relying on him, when ever a game was nearing the end, marbury would take over and take the responsibility upon himself to deliver the win. And thats what makes someone a franchise player.

we definetly can win a championship with a team built around him, why not? marb's kinda like isiah, a scoring point guard, who didnt start winning until his scoring declining. Marb is still in the prime of his career, so building around him with players who match his style would be great, players who can compensate for his weaknesses.

Sorry, I think franchise players, those 3 come to mind. I could have thrown in TMac, Kobe, Kidd, etc.

I'm just gonna go out on a limb and assume you meant to put that in the "Marbury 4 Allen?" thread.

You win a championship with talented players who play hard and with some luck stay relatively healthy. You can win a championship if your team is built around Rip Hamilton. Of course, you can if it's built around Steph.
He is a great player, and an all star, but he needs help if this team is going to go anywhere.
Everyone needs help. Even Jordan could win a playoff series on his own.

All i was sayin was that Marbs isn't worth Ray Allen. Marbs is twice a guard Ray Allen is. Ray Allen is a great and accurate shooter, but he can't see the floor as well as Marbury.

Stephon is an excellent player. He is definately a top 3 point guard in the league today. He has everything you can want in a franchise but right now, we just cannot build a team around him. Isiah has to think of him as the second option in an offense that is built on post presence.

I think the best we can hope for from Stephon is this season. He has a little help from Crawford and a little promise in Sweetney. He has a bodyguard in JYD that will never back down to anyone.

Stephon and TT are both going to have a breakout season this year IMO.

...and I think Stephon will emerge as more of a leader this year too, which would moreso validate the label of "Franchise".
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

Not sure what you mean? Are you saying his career will go downhill after this year?

good question, in my opinion, a franchise player is someone who is dominant. There really isnt anything about dominant in marbarys game that a team decent defensive team cant stop.

Core: In the last 8 years, Stephon has never been able to let the 'Franchise' label stick. I hope it happens but it wont. There is just no evidence to support it. I know you are going to tell me he had no support and you are right. I hope he can make it stick and I hope he turns into our Franchise. Thank god he is here though. No more running the offense around the gimp.

Stephon always wanted to play for the Knicks. I believe that he'll bring his "A" game night in & night out this season.

Gimp... lol Spit those names out!

You are right. He did always want to bring his game to NYC and now he will have his first real shot at a season wearing the blue and orange. It will be pleasent to see passion in the garden again. I am almost sure that JYD is going to be really close to John Starks.

He might not bleed orange and blue like starks did but he will come pretty damn close. I have high hopes from this season. What do u think we will place this year in the east Core? This is of course considering the offense is run around Stephon and not a 3rd option jump shooting specialist.

The offense will be orchestrated thru Starbury this year IMO, and definitely not thru the "Gimp shooter" .
We'll prolly go top 3, but no matter what, we'll get home court in the 1st round. The Knicks are gonna shock all the naysayers and haters this year. The ones who called it early will be pleased, but not at all surprised. lol

He is our franchise player as the ball must go thru him to be successful. He is not the franchise player that can lead us to the championship.

Yet.

But he can be. As excellent a player as he is, and no doubting his extreme talent, he has yet to exibit greatness. He can post numbers, but has not been a leader. Im not saying its his fault, it just has yet to be. He has not had the team around him to do so. TT, Naz, KT, and Craw have yet to acomplish anything substantial either. Good players have big nights and can score, but great players win. So by my definition, not he is not a franchise player to lead us to a championship. But that does not mean he cannot develope into one if it means more to him than air.

Championship teams have at least two franchise players. If Marbury gets to play with another one in the next two or three years (particularly one with a post up game), he can be part of a championship team with the Knicks.

Wow!! Its amazing. This is the first time I agree with almost everyone on this thread. The general opinion seems to be that "Marbury is not yet a franchise because he has had no support but as soon as he gets to play with another good player or he gets enough support, he will basically be our franchise." Hope this is close enough to what everyone thinks.
