In a more balanced world were most things are in the middle I think that if Mills was disingenuous about trade that would be his first move and defacto head of Knicks, and would do much to harm his reputation.
There is and should be an honor amung "thieves" and deception is not usually accepted amung the 30 teams. Sure trades are sometimes imbalanced as mistakes are made or teams have agendas and hindsight does not smile upon them, but for Mills to waste that kind of time would isolate the knicks perhaps even worse than PHil might have.
Its entirely possible that teams had pushed back no Phil and would not enter into trade talks because he himself might have angered teams or been a bit bat shyt out of reality with some trade talks previously.
Or
He was ready to just buy him out providing no relief or value for the knicks.
We just don't know. I don't agree with your theory as it is short sighted. Dolan really does not care about what others think of him. Never has, never did.
Melo was seen in in Houstan. Paul is a Rocket. That is not "fake'. Also, Rockets as constructed are still behind the arms race out west.
It's a PR move to get knicks fans off the franchise and Melo's backs.
Just like when Melo reportedly screamed at KP for praising the triangle publicly.
They think about this stuff, especially Melo who is known for his passive aggressive behavior.
They are trying to take any responsibility they have towards Melo next season and putting on the Cavs or Rockets by saying they were unreasonable in trades. This is playing both sides of the fence 101. Mills/Melo/Dolan essentially saying 'Don't hate us, those other guys are the reason we didn't move on!' It covers them if Melo stays and plays bad and they can do the reverse and say it was their decision to keep him if Melo plays good.
Dolan does care A LOT about what other people think about him. In fact, I think that was 100% his motivation for canning Phil early. He didn't like being teased in public about Phil. Especially at his awful Jazz band concerts.
