Sacramento Kings Vice President of Basketball Operations Scott Perry joined Adrian Wojnarowki on The Vertical podcast in an episode released Friday. The show was recorded in LA, suggesting Perry probably attended the Roc Nation workout with Vlade Divac. In the show, Perry talks about how he transitioned to the Kings, but he also talks about working with Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé.

There was one piece in particular that I found interesting. Woj and Perry talk about, even if they don’t address any specifics, the mistakes of Vivek as an owner and how Perry is going to help right the ship in Sacramento.

“I think Vivek, just like a lot of the newer owners, there’s a learning curve. It takes time, you know. I think the biggest adjustment for any owner is trying to figure out, or learning the fact that this basketball business - and the all hear it coming through the door - there’s no other business like that. And they’ve been wildly successful and he’s been wildly successful in his personal endeavors as a businessman. So when you first hear that, oh well this business is like no other, I think it takes time for people to get in it, roll up their sleeves, and find out and come to the realization that oh yeah you’re right. Because you’re not dealing with a product you’re putting out, it’s people you’re dealing with every day. So there’s so much that goes into that dynamic and you can’t always put numbers on things to predict behavior or future outcomes. Is it a tool that can help you in the basketball business? Yes, but when you’re talking about putting a basketball team together, it’s 15 different personalities, there’s coaching personalities, and getting all that to mesh at one time to become a successful team, that’s not an exact science.”
Personally, I can’t get enough of listening to Perry talk about basketball and building NBA teams. This segment is just a few minutes of the whole podcast, which I highly recommend listening to. But I think Perry nails the issues the Kings have had. The Kings have put together teams on paper, but without much regard with how pieces will interact. DeMarcus Cousins is a good player, George Karl is a good coach, but we know that adding them together didn’t work.

I’m very encouraged by this podcast. Not only does Perry know how an NBA front office should operate, it sounds like he’s being empowered and listened to. Things could always change, of course, but for now at least things are moving in the right direction.

The Kings have a difficult rebuild ahead, but I’m encouraged that they have Perry helping guide the way.

Look I wanted Melo to be traded, but if the best player we are getting is Mo Harkless, that's a pretty weak return. We need to get some draft picks, or some young players with upside. Mo is ok, but nothing we couldn't get without trading Melo.

I think they want to up his value or make it seem like they are not desperate to trade him.
Teams have not given their best offer, yet.

The only thing I dislike about this, is so long as Melo is a Knick. you won't see Kristaps, Timmy and the younger players get the same chances. Melo just isn't a guy you have when you're re-building and trying to establish young stars. Instead of signing Timmy, if we were going to keep Melo we needed to go sign a guy like George Hill who would help blend Melo and KP's talent together, and could also share the backcourt with Frank. Right now the Knicks would have 54$M in salaries to Melo/THj/Clee. And like 8M to point guards. That's not balance. You needed a point guard investment if you were keeping Melo.

Don't think he wants Melo back longterm.
Melo has an opt out at end of season.
He will be taking that, and going to team up with Lebron or Paul.
The issue is whether they feel they have the right assets back.
They may not be happy with what they are getting.

Just the presence of Melo is enough to send the younger players down hill their minds will get corrupted. He is the anti leader. Look at the shut KP pulled now he is a total diva. This is why Melo just can't come back it's ridiculous to do so.

But I understand trying to get back more assets for him. It's a good move to make Houston and the Cavs sweat a bit.

Seems like he has a good outlook. Have read he is well liked around the NBA. Good hire.
