It makes too much sense...
Waiters declined his player option with Miami after having a solid bounce back season last year with them on a one year contract. He is 25 years old, still has plenty of upside and would blend with our young core going forward.
Lee was one of the few Knicks who had a very good season last year. He became one of my favorite players with his professionalism, work ethic, toughness, and ability to hit clutch shots. He's everything you want in a vet; however, we are clearly rebuilding, which is what we should be doing, and his age (31) and contract (2 more years after this one) does not fit our timeline. Miami is an up and coming team who just missed the playoffs last year and could use a vet like Lee to get them over the hump and absorb the loss of Waiters.
Lee makes 12 mill this year. Have Miami sign Waiters for 10 mill for 3 years and then trade him for Lee. It works. These are the type of moves and creative thinking we should be doing.
And we wouldn't lose any of our cap space this year to pursue a cheap vet at backup pg and find some other younger players.
