Kentucky Wildcats head coach John Calipari has reached out through intermediaries to express an interest in the Knicks’ presidency, Ian Begley of ESPN tweets.

The report is corroborated by ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk who adds, in his own tweet, that Calipari has been interested in a return to the NBA but only for the “right job”.

New York, of course, has been seeking a a replacement at the top level ever since the franchise parted ways with Phil Jackson yesterday. Already linked to the franchise have been Isiaih Thomas and Masai Ujiri.

While Calipari has seen action in the NBA before, it seems like a lifetime ago that he patrolled the sidelines for the Nets and 76ers. From 1996-1999, he managed a 72-112 record as the head coach in New Jersey.

The entirety of Calipari’s previous professional stint, then, came before he evolved into the college game’s most vaunted recruiter, a characteristic that makes him far more appealing than any Xs and Os experience.

Having an asset like Calipari involved with the franchise could be a boon for the Knicks, considering the sheer amount of players he has either coached or recruited over his years with Kentucky and Memphis.

Suffice it to say, all Begley’s tweet suggests is that Calipari has expressed an interest in the position and there’s no guarantee that the interest is mutual at this point in time.

Should have put a question mark in there, lol. Interesting idea. I know how he did last time in the league, but Im sure he learned a few things since then, and he has first rate connections.

Say what you want about Calipari, but a) he knows how to identify talent and b) he is an outstanding recruiter.

I thought about Calipari but even at an older age he's still too much of a wild card for me. We need somebody steady with a proven track record. Unfortunately he's exactly the type of personality who could talk Dolan into giving him the gig.

By the way, didn't he draft Kerry Kittles over Kobe?

LoL..is this a joke, this dudes tenure in the NBA was terrible, and he's ego is pop diva. Fck these good coaches trying to be president. We need a experience person with a solid back round, and good track record.

And who has a good track record other than GS and Spurs and Riley, with Ainge 4th? All else are clowns. Masai and Presti included.

This is the whole issue. Even Riley and ainge could be cticized and would be vilified by ny media and would be thrown out

Riley has had suspect drafting. Awesome at FAs and trades though and obtaining the lebrons and shaqs. Also gets an assist from Miami weather and taxes

Ainge has spottier drafting. His biggest successes have been gifts from Minnesota and nets and seeing gems in the dustbin (e.g. Thomas)

No one is perfect and you need to see the balance of the body of work. It's far easier to do that when team is succeeding or showing progress

In ny we are so impatient and Demand instant success. And because of that we're screwed

Also when it comes to free agency would there be a better guy out their to recruit?

In the last like 30 years the only NBA players who take discounts are old guys who want to stay on teams and the superfriends who left a little money on the table to start their big 3.

There is no recruiting in the NBA when it comes to acquiring talent. You need lots of cap space and deep pockets.

I guess I am the few who wouldn't mind this hiring. as a matter of fact, he would be number two on my list behind griffin. it seems like it is another celebrity hire but cal has some qualities that are valuable.

1.) his connections and relatability with todays athletes. he is entrenched with the aau culture and the politics of it, though shady, that it will be beneficial during the draft and even free agency

2.) he is media savvy and have the new York type a personality that is needed for this job.

3.) he has matured since the nets gig. he was wet behind the ears then and was given the keys far too early. he is older and wiser now.

there are definitely some red flags such as the enemies he has accumulated over the years with benefitting with "one and done" rules and his cantankerous attitude. also running a franchise and dealing with other gms to get deals could prove to be frustrating. however, I think his advantages outweigh the disadvantages imo.

Don't fall for names. This is just an admistrative position. Mills is a great choice and Houston would be also.

Good points there. Unlike Isiah with the Knicks, Calipari has done a lot career wise to erase the memory of his stint with the Nets. He knows its a player's league now as well. He has to clean house though for it to work. Rebuild the organization.
