Phil gave Melo a NTC. Then asks to have him paid $50mm+ to go play for another team. Over $50mm. Let that sink in. That is abysmal management by any measure. Had Phil had the team winning and in the playoffs and this stuff played out I suspect Melo goes and Phil stays, but this team gets blasted for its play on the court and blasted for its management off the court.

Dolan may be a troll and a terrible owner but when your management has a blunder of this magnitude severance is always on the table. The drama regarding Melo is media fed. The context of this is more simple. Replace Melo with "player A." Then tell anyone on earth what has happened over the last 3 years and everyone who understands pro sports would say "that GM is getting canned."

Dear Phil... thanks for establishing the importantance of the draft and player development. Hopefully future management takes note. Thanks for KP. Thanks for Willy. Hopefully thanks for Frank and who knows if another one of these guys your scouts have found pop. Great job. The rest was a disaster.

Cheers,

I am not convinced he wanted to re-sign Melo. I think Phil went along with it, hoping he can help Melo see that he needed to change to win.

It didn't work because Melo has a low BBall IQ.

PHil gave it one more chance last year by getting Rose, Noah etc... It didn't work again. Time to move one. Melo used his NTC to demand a buyout and DOlan sided with Melo because he is the dumbest guy in the room.

Reports were that Phil didn't want to buy out and that Melo was angling for it.

My opinion is that Melo has hated Phil for longer than a year and has been engaging in undermining since early last season.

Look for the first public quote about Jackson talking about Melo holding the ball too much. You know once Phil got to this point he tried to have Melo talked to discreetly a number of times and he resisted.

So Melo has sabotaged his own efforts to get traded so he can get bought out and land with his buddies, wherever he wants.

But he compounded that with Phil vs. KP, and I suspect at that point, Mills went to Dolan and said help!

more than a year and he played poorly on purpose to lose games, IMO. The guy is so selfish.

I cannot wait until Phil talks. I truly hope he lays it all out there.

I for one don't think Dolan had anything to do with this other than to accommodate Phil

My own guess is Phil realized that in one way or another melo would be an albatross for 2 more years and he didn't want any part of that. (Yes I appreciate he gave melo the ntc)

His health isn't great, his 17 year relationship w Jeannie dissolved. He just decided he didn't want this **** show anymore. Compounding it I'm sure was a sense that he felt deeply unappreciated

I also disagree and think this is very complicated. Things will get a lot worse before they get better. Mills is a knucklehead. Where is the teams direction and identity going to come from now? Who can Dolan possibly hire who is any good

At least w Phil, Dolan thought Phil knew more than himself and didn't meddle

This is going to suck big time for everyone now that the lightning rod is gone. Players, Dolan, mills, hornacek everyone even the media

He will need to sign a non disclosure if he wants to rape Dolan of another 24 milly. Doubt we will see or hear much from Jackson ever again!

nothing has changed. I can always be patient with a GM/Pres that drafts well and is focused on developing youth. I would have been fine if he stayed. I just dont think this is all as simple as "Melo slayed Phil."
Phil made enough mistakes to get himself chopped. Its that simple. Maybe the next guy Dolan picks will be media savvy. Trade savvy too. Free agent savvy wouldnt hurt either. Twitter savvy is optional.

By free agent savy and trade savy, I hope you mean that standing put can sometimes be your best option. The Knicks absolutely finally need to have a breakout super duper star and we aren't going to be able to trade for one nor are we getting one via free agency. We are going to have to bite the bullet and just be the absolute worst team in the league this next season, unless KP is ready to break out.

This is the Perfect Analogy I just read

Let’s say you happen to know the greatest dentist in the world. And it’s not close. This guy has shown for years that he can perform magic in orthodontia. People come from all over the world to see this guy, and he fixes their teeth every time.

“Now answer me this: If you were having a heart attack, would you want this guy to fix your heart, too? They’re both called ‘doctor.’ But they’re two entirely different jobs.”

I only used that analogy about 75,000 times the last three-plus years, as it slowly, and then rapidly, became apparent Jackson was taking a curious – and then ruinous – approach toward building the Knicks. And believe me, it wasn’t always easy to do that thanks to the presence of those Michael Kay so astutely calls “Phil Truthers.”

Phil is a great coach, not a president, and that's all I continue to state in so many ways

I don't like losing Jackson's basketball principals. Phil didn't seem like he was going to makes moves to collect multiple picks in the future which would be needed in this rebuild though.

There are legit criticism for Phil like Noah's contract, trading Tyson for Calderon. But people have flat out made stuff up, twisted the truth and purposely pushed narratives in order t bash him. Can't respect that.

Now that the pressure is on Melo of course you already see defense case being built up.

Someone like Ujiri will come in and make trades for future draft picks. His draft record i'm not really sold on though even with those draft picks. If only we could have someone like Ujiri making the moves to collect assets to go with Phil's basketball principals.

I hope he just picks a straight numbers guy. But I have a feeling we end up with a proxy for Isiah and/or GM MElo.

I suspect if it had just been Phil vs. Melo, Phil might have lasted.

But he compounded that with Phil vs. KP, and I suspect at that point, Mills went to Dolan and said help!

Begley's article and when he was on Espn, said people had been in Dolan's ear all year trying to get him to move on from Phil. He also said some players and coaches let it be known they thought the team should move on from the triangle. Add the drama with Melo, the exit meeting drama with KP, the losing, bad contracts, etc and I don't see how he could be kept in his position.
