In which case I think Phil is looking for a player that is able to play off the ball more. A guard that can bring the ball up, drive, dish, shoot. Also be comfortable moving off the ball, just bring the ball up and making a pass to set up the Triangle.

I think Monk is viewed as much higher than DSJ from Phil, as is Ntilikina.

My guess is Phil would prefer Isaac (If he drops), Nti or Monk all over DSJ.

DSJ has/had the raw talent to be the first overall pick in this draft.

The injury questions was something he could not control

He could have gone a program more conducive to open up his future NBA options, that was in his control.

He could play with more discipline and not be such a knucklehead, that's in his control.

Biggest red flag is even the moderate agents avoided this guy. I'm not saying he's on the level of Johnny Manziel, but the Manziel experience really colored alot of agents out there regarding what is the limit they will endure for the hope that a guy breaks out. Think about it, lots of mid tier agents have assessed DSJ as not worth the investment and time. And these are basically sub human power brokers who are used to divas and selfish douchebags in the players corps. What does that say?

Personally, I think it's better for the Knicks, better for DSJ and better for the league if he ends up on the Mavericks. They have the structure to possibly help this kid and help him reach his potential. There just is not the structure and stability in place to try to fix a project like DSJ. He has A TON OF TALENT. He could have the potential to be a true franchise player. But there are just more issues than that when it comes to drafting him.

You could have put Steph Curry on any team, and he would succeed. Don Nelson even said that. And Nelson hated rookie players his whole career. You need a certain kind of character and mindset to thrive no matter what.

DSJ just doesn't have that. Sometimes you just can't fix stupid. And for all the talent in the world, that's how a lot of NBA people see DSJ, as a guy who has to fight himself to be where he needs to be to succeed. Basically stupid.

I wish this kid all the luck and good fortune in the world.... just on another team.

Having heard much of the same I did some reading on a couple NC State forums... lets see what fans who follow that team we follow this team have to say. Honestly it was mixed. I would say 60% blamed these reports on the toxic coaching situation. However of the folks that blamed Smith for poor attitude about half of them also admitted it was a tough environment to succeed in. Its tough. Smith may be the best of them all. He might be Beasley.

I do have confidence the Knicks take the right guy.

That had to be what the dinner was about. Phil probably was like we know the guy has talent and cnn play. They probably studied a lot of his film and didnt feel it was a question of his skill set. But a question of where his head is at. If Smith falls and we draft him its because the interview told Phil what he needed to know.

At the same time he was wrong about Rose who gave plenty of ear music. And he wasn't able to mold Melo. And he is having minor problems at the moment with KP.

IMO Phil will be open to Monk, DSJ, DMitch or Nitty. They all have talent and the Knicks simply need LEGIT TALENT in bunches. I view all of these guards similarly but each just a little different from each other but basically athletic, quick guards that can shoot like SG's. Knicks can't lose with any of these kids IMO.
