What I like about Ntilikina is that we could probably keep the same team and improve our defense with him.
If you can not get a good deal for Melo, you keep him, you probably stay in the "close to the playoffs, but not quite there' boat, but you're developing players around Melo.
Hernangomez
Porzingis
Melo
Baker
Ntilikina
That's 4 young guys around Melo, and Melo needs to get back to what he was doing in 15-16 and being dad Melo. As much as I am for trading Melo, I want to do it for a good deal without having to take back bad contracts or lack of young talent/draft picks. If you develop those 4 around Melo, you stay competitive and you give them chances to grow and as players without the same pressure as if Melo were not there.
Defensively even, I think with Baker/Ntilikina, the team will do better.
If we can trade Lee for another draft pick, maybe get Justin Jackson who the Knicks seem to like, that's great.
Now if we deal Melo, the need for a DSJ or a player that can do more right away is there like a Monk, who can probably give us 15 points a night if Melo is traded.
Ntilkina is both a "steal" pick in that he's 18, young, and no one really knows his true potential right now, and that he also fits in a scenario where Melo is here next season. With Melo around you need less from your point guard. You need more of a defender, a smart passer, and a guy that can shoot the 3. We saw that with Rose. Rose and Melo had zero chemistry.
There's just a big positive in drafting Ntilikina for the present if we wind up keeping Melo, which is 50% in my book. I don't think it's a given we trade Melo.
