This might rate as the most bittersweet birthday for Carmelo Anthony, who turned 33 on Monday with his professional career and personal life in upheaval.
On the team’s official Twitter account, the Knicks posted a large Anthony photo with “Happy Birthday Carmelo” wishes, though it is doubtful he got a card from Knicks president Phil Jackson and he got no Twitter love from his estranged wife La La. The Zen Master has publicly placed him on the trading block, feeling Anthony no longer fits into his team-oriented triangle.
As Anthony hits 33, he has suffered four straight seasons out of the playoffs while his buddy, LeBron James, is about to play in his seventh straight NBA Finals.
James is seven months shy of 33. Playing the same small-forward position, they came into the league together in 2003.
In those first few seasons, James and Anthony were inextricably linked, compared and part of a debate on who would become the better pro. When Anthony got to the Knicks in 2011, there was still chatter about Anthony owning James in their one-on-one battles. Ancient history.
“I do look at my peers and say, ‘Damn, what am I doing wrong?’ ” Anthony said last season.
With reports of a separation from his wife, Anthony has kept an extreme low profile since the regular season ended April 12 with no public comments. His last tweet came April 14, when he reacted incredulously to Jackson’s infamous postseason press conference when he said Anthony “will be better off somewhere else.’’
On Instagram, former Knicks player development coach Chris Brickley posted a video of Anthony in the Manhattan gym he owns recently. In a black hoodie, Anthony drained all sorts of spinning, turnaround mid-range jumpers. Brickley wrote: “When you love what you do, you want to be the best at it!!”
Meanwhile, James talked this weekend about his legacy leading up to Thursday’s Game 1 of the NBA Finals against Golden State, noting he has led two different franchises to four NBA Finals each.
“Nobody’s been able to do that,’’ James said.
The Cavaliers refused to part with Kevin Love before the trade deadline for Anthony and so far it looks like the right call. Love is weaving a spectacular playoff — a stout rebounder sizzling on corner 3-pointers who averaged 22.6 points and 12.4 rebounds in the Celtics series.
If the Cavaliers get smoked in The Finals, maybe they would revisit Anthony. The Celtics could be in play after being overrun in five games by the Cavs, with Boston general manager Danny Ainge saying, “We have a lot of good players, but we need some great ones.” Chris Paul is likely to re-sign with the Clippers and lobby for an Anthony trade. Washington? San Antonio? Oklahoma City? Memphis? They can all use him.
In recent weeks, Lance Thomas, Clyde Frazier and Earl Monroe have all stuck up for Anthony being a valuable Knicks piece. Anthony has his no-trade clause, but still must
Dear Melo,
Happy Birthday. Your not doing anything "wrong", your a caring father, a good teammate and beloved by them and your fans! You are dedicated to your craft and work hard to stay in shape and a first ballot HOF player.
Your holding the ball too long.
Sometimes great players don't get on the right team to win a championship. If your not the Celtics, Spurs, GSW or named Lebron your not going to the finals. It happens. Call Pat Ewing, he got to the finals. Few blame him for not winning more. Back then we called that "Jordan".
You want to know what your doing wrong? I played, I coached. I have 13 rings with my name on it. Why not ask me. You have. You don't listen to me. Your still asking. Why are you still asking? I have coddled you, lived up to my promise to Dolan to resign you, gave what you asked for. You own your own gym in manhattan, thats awesome. You have a great son. Your a good dad. Your an idiot husband, but then you married a reality TV star and ran with that. You weaved the sanctity of family life with TV. Bad. Be like Mike, get a divorce and stay true to your self. Be like Kobe, Own up to your mistakes and evolve. Be like Lebron and be a leader of men. Your 33, and "La La is married, Im not" is not just a bad statement, its true about other things in your life. "IM a player on the Knicks, but Im not Knick" might be a similar statement to your commitment. Fans love you, and your very financially successful. What you fail to see is "Winning" is not easy when you want to be a star first and foremost! You have the talent but your not about the beauty of the game when its played right.
Thats what wrong.
Personally I like you and wish you great happiness!
Love, Phil
