NBA COMMISSIONER SILVER STATEMENT REGARDING OAKLEY AND MSG SITUATION

NEW YORK, Feb. 13, 2017 – NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued the following statement today regarding the situation involving Charles Oakley and Madison Square Garden:

“It is beyond disheartening to see situations involving members of the NBA family like the one that occurred at Madison Square Garden this past week. In an effort to find a path forward, New York Knicks owner Jim Dolan, Charles Oakley, and I met today at the league office, along with Michael Jordan, who participated by phone.

“Both Mr. Oakley and Mr. Dolan were apologetic about the incident and subsequent comments, and their negative impact on the Knicks organization and the NBA. Mr. Dolan expressed his hope that Mr. Oakley would return to MSG as his guest in the near future.

“I appreciate the efforts of Mr. Dolan, Mr. Oakley and Mr. Jordan to work towards a resolution of this matter.”

I really like Adam Silver. I think he's done a good damn job. I've liked him since he banned Donald Sterling for life. No lockout this year. And now this. Quality job by Adam Silver here.

He brought in Michael Effin' Jordan! That's a power move by Silver. Frickin' love this guy.

Adam Silver has done a fine job as commissioner. Class act... took matters in his own hands to resolve a situation that's caused such a stain on the nba reputation.

If anything, I'd imagine they'd be elated by a jackass like Dolan. Him being as incompetent as he is allows them to have one less team to worry about...

Good to hear. I was pretty upset that they would be so horrible to Oakley. Would love to see this as an opportunity for the Knicks to connect with all their alum and really build that institutional knowledge with active vets. Those tough nosed 90s teams are all I ever knew of good basketball.

Maybe they can put the gang back together for 1 more run. I'm sure they would win more than games then this team won over the past 4yrs

Okay, Dolan finally decides to act like a man and not like a Little Jimmy. Took some prodding from Mommy Silver and Daddy Jordan, but better this way than no way. Him owning up to his mistakes and trying to make amends certainly deserves respect.

Now, how about Silver doing something about the refs, who sink the Knicks every single damn game?

Which gang? The one with Trent Tucker and Rory Sparrow? Even they could come out and put a beating on these pansies.

Dolan deserve zero respect.

He's a clown.

He only went running to Silver after his poor attempts at positive PR with Michael Kay and Latrell Sprewell.

I don't think that's what's going on here.

The NBA does not like bad press like this. It's bad for business. Dolan might be an idiot who inherited Daddy's Money, but he's an owner. Being an owner means you have rope to do stupid things. Much harder to replace an owner than a player or a former player.

It's an open message that Oakley is league poison and anyone associating with Oakley will fall into league disfavor.

Oakley has now been league sanctioned blackballed from the NBA. He might be able to go to a game now and then, but he's not going to get any coaching jobs, no chance at the front office, no chance to to be a scout, no chance to ever work for the league, no chance to ever be associated with the league ever again.

Do you know how the NYPD can shut down elements of the press who don't follow the informal rules? Not the big hitters, but the small fish in the pond who try to buck the established order? Police PR thanks that reporter in the open, to the public. The unspoken word there is dude is a snitch, you can't trust him, he will sell you out to the cops. It seems like a compliment, but it's a death sentence.

Silver just dropped a quiet hammer on Oakley here. Deserved or not. Any team now who associated with Oakley more than casually will see league disfavor.

Do not mistake Silver as being massively different than David Stern. For decades, NBA front offices refused to talk to press about many issues, "fearing league retaliation" Silver simply markets himself differently, but he still is a proxy for the will of the owners. Even douchebag owners like Dolan.

I'm all for the truce and oaks return

I am not a Silver fan. First, if he's going to broker a truce don't issue a press release about it as shameless self promotion. Instead let other people give you credit and then only after he truce has some success

The NBA officiating is a joke. He says nothing about any of that even under the most egregious of circumstances. Teams will be in and out of the playoffs as a result and the league won't issue even the most tepid of apologies. A joke

Last the cba is not fan friendly. Expect to see more super teams and more teams languishing. As more and more player enter big money (not even necessarily max) they will of course front run and join teams that are already good in hopes of winning a Championship

The league will compound this by having officials give the star teams star treatment

Sorry not a silver fan at all. Haven't liked him since his Jackson triangle comments

makes zero sense. This is 1+1=17. Where are you getting this from?
Oakley does what he wants, has written a couple books, runs a business and in his 2nd life is doing what he is passionate about... Cooking. He's never said he wants to coach, scout or manage anything. He once said he would like "to be involved."

Agree with you an Eny. Put in anti flopping rules and Ts for arguing with refs as well. He's all about making the game better and has been fantastic.

Diplomacy wins in the long run. Oak and Jimmy came to the table and apologized. Both were at fault. Jimmy need not apologize for being a little Shyte, just for what happend with Oak.
Oak has not been a coach in about 5 years. He last worked for Jordan as assistant coach.
He is married to women in ATL, owns some business, and is doing just fine.
There are limits to blasting about. Oak now knows whats cool, what is not.

One thing Jimmy knows, "Don't touch"!!!
