You need a good 10 man rotation in the NBA to be competitive unless you have 2 or 3 superstars that can carry you. In the Knicks case I see them as a team with a potential to have 1 all-star, and the rest is up to depth. KP needs to be our featured player, and you take the wins and losses as they come with investing in him, You hope for growth and movement forward. Guys like BJ are needed in a rebuilding situation because you need a 10 man rotation. Not like we are going to be drafting top 3 and a franchise point guard is coming our way this summer. We are going to get a solid player in the draft, maybe a good get or a steal. A franchise point guard is not happening.
If BJ stays for 24M over 3 years, I take him. He's a solid backup and good lockerroom guy. He plays with passion. He looks to pass. He's probably going to get better with time in consistency of the same role. He reminds me a little bit of Jason Terry when Terry was in Dallas. Would come off the bench and do some good things with Dirk. I think he and KP can have some real chemistry there and I see good chemistry with BJ and Willy as well.
In the end we won't be any good until we either have 2-3 superstars in their prime or 1 star and a very good 10 man rotation (Like Boston has). Whichever way we acheieve it, I am ok. I think it's easier to have a team that has a good bench and a 10 man rotation than to sign or draft 3 KP level talents.
So I'm looking towards some internal growth, some youth brought in from a Melo trade, some youth from the draft lottery and some in athletic prime free agents brought in. More than anything, we need to invest in players that want to play the right way. Jennings is that to a large extent. He looks to pass first. He looks to bring energy. He's been a good signing for Phil. The biggest problem with our team is the 1 on 1 no defense culture Melo and Rose have brought combined with Noah's horrible play.
